it looks like a tree frog tad of some sort
Greetings fellow frog and toad enthusiasts,
Can anyone take a gander at this little polliwog? I know there is another fellow behind it but it's probably too far away to tell. I also know it's a real challenge to ID a tadpole but I thought I'd take a chance and ask around. I estimate it at about 3 cm end-to-end. I hear almost exclusively Tree Frogs outside (I'm in Maryland) but this looks very similar to a Wood Frog... it's light brownish grey with a metallic golden gut and tan/brown/gold speckles all over, with crazy coppery eyes. Thoughts?
Thanks all!

I think it's getting late in the year to find a wood frog tadpole. The kind of environment it was found in can be a clue as well, Wood Frogs will usually breed in vernal pools for example. Are the eyes dorsal are lateral (view from above)? Have a look at Guide to Tadpoles
Or a table of some of the more common tadpoles: Tadpole Identification Table
My usual link to the full key seems to be kaput, but in case it comes back to life: http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/tadpole/tutorial.htm
unclechester/brian: you're right that link is "kaput" i went to the main site and it said it was not working... the taddies came from a big planter i filled with water, plunked a giant rock in the middle, situated it next to my pond, and stood back and waited... i have a happy northern green frog that enjoys my pond and i think a bullfrog too, the only frogs i can hear at night are tree frogs, the grey ones i think. eyes are definitely lateral. i will post a few more pix in the next post...
more pix! it's about 3 - 3/12 cm long.![]()
