Substrate getting in water

Hey guys i am bran new to this site, and i already have a question. I have two fire belly toads. I use eco earth as a substrate, and i have a large water bowl that takes up alot of the tank. My toads always seem to get the eco earth into the water. Do you guys have any suggestions for how to clean it or how to keep the eco earth out of it? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!!!

I'm not sure it can be avoided. If it's on their tiny bodies, it's going to get into the water. I use the presence of ecoearth in water dish to determine that she's been soaking and maybe peeing and it's time to change it. If too much is getting into dish all the time, maybe elevate it a little somehow with a ramp for them to get in and out? Or flat stones surrounding dish maybe would act as a barrier between their water and their substrate. Or sit them down and talk it out with them.

I don't have FBTs, but I've seen some neat water/land set-ups on here. Some are pretty intricate. Someone with experience setting them up will surely come along and help you out. Or go through this section with a focus on fbt homes and you'll probably get inspired.

I have done this for a local herp keeper.


Mixed up a firm batch of mortar and made a ring to place around the water dish that
also acts like a ramp and serves as a transition from substrate to water that is safe for the frogs.
I pushed rounded gravel into the surface of the mortar as it dried.
The mortar locks in the gravel so it can't be swallowed by the frogs.

There's no way of getting around it. They love climbing out of the water than splashing into it. If you fuss over the eco earth in the water to much you'll drive yourself crazy. Just keep up on your water changes and ignore the eco earth that they drag into it in between
