Only need to change substrate once a month. I have live pothos in with my pacman and it does just fine with being uprooted every month. Even out grew the tank so I was able to clip it to start a new plant for another tank in the future. Put down a layer of weed blocker (that black papery stuff) over your gravel and your eco earth on top of that
