I recently given a large tank that I would love to turn into a large vivarium. (We think it is 250 gallons) It is 5 1/2 feet long. My question is if I was to make it primarily for frogs (or toads) what would you recommend? Could I mix types? What would be the best types for a long tank? Are there any types of fish that would be ok to add? How many frogs would be ok? Any help appreciated, ty!
Hi there!
How about making it into an aqua-terraria and putting some Fire Bellies in there? They are very funny frogs to watch and are quite active.
Avoid mixing species. I know it can be tempting but it can never be a good thing for the animals. There's just so many things that can go wrong.
In such a huge viv I'm sure you can add fish. You need to do frequent water changes tho to prevent the toxins from the frogs to hurt the fish. A large tank as this could house alot of frogs too but remember that alot of frogs = alot of food that you need to have availible.
Thank you, I will look into them.
Can you measure your tank length, height, and depth and post those here? A 5.5 ft tank would have to be very deep or/and tall to contain 250 gallons. Reason I ask is because we could give you very wrong information (i.e. no. of frogs to keep) if size is not correct. You can also use this calculator to get your tank volume: http://angelfish.net/tankvolcalc.php.
Mixing different frogs species is challenging and could result in stressed or dead frogs. Several members here have a couple of coexisting tree frogs or mix toads with other frogs, etc.; but the long term success stories are far and few. This article has good info to help you decide what you would like to keep: Frog Forum - Choosing a Frog.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
Hello, the dementions are Width: 60.5"
Height: 25"
Depth: 18.5" A tank volume calculator said it is actually about 120? The person who gave it to me guessed 250, said he couldn't remember. He bought it almost 10 years ago. Also don't worry, I would never mix types if it could be a problem. I just wasn't sure if anyone knew of types that did work well together. I just want to make sure that whatever type of frogs I pick will have plenty of room and be very happy.![]()
Put a pair of albino bullfrogs in there!
