Make sure soil is free from chemicals like fertilizers or pesticides. I use shredded coco (Zoo Med's Plantation Soil).

Ensure water is dechlorinated.

Toads like it drier than frogs, do not overmist.

Can't recall how big is your toad (snout to vent) so can't tell if 10 gal. is OK or not. Sounds like you are making progress !
