    Default Newbie from VT.

I do not have any pet frogs at all. I am a fish-keeper. And I have a somewhat long rambling post for those of who might read it.

I've come to your forum because I had the idea of trying to raise some tadpoles into frogs using one of my empty aquariums. I was out looking for a new buddy for one of my goldfish. Seeing what I think were bullfrog tadpoles in one of the goldfish tanks,I thought of raising some bullfrog tadpoles I had raised some wood frog tadpoles as a child and then released them into the wild once they turned into frogs, so it seemed like it might be fun.
I did a google search on bullfrogs and I was thinking that maybe I don't want some juvenile bullfrogs on my hands. I started thinking those bullfrog tadpoles might be better off with someone who has a pond.

I did stumble on some auctions on ebay selling grey tree frog tadpoles, intrigued I read further. I thought these might possibly work out better for me, but I need to do some more research on their care. I'm fairly confident I could raise some tadpoles, but feeding a couple of baby froglets is what I'm not sure of. I assume if they lived, I'd keep 3-4 of them and re-home the rest?... That's the unfamiliar territory for me. I have a couple of empty aquariums in the size range of 20-40 gal and spare filters. Maybe if I decide to go this route, I can find someone within driving distance with some spare tadpoles instead of mail ordering them.

Or maybe those and or the dwarf aquatic frogs might be a possibility in my clown pleco tanks.
Clown plecos are very peaceful community fish that only get territorial with other bottom dwelling fish, most notably related pleco species and each other. So most anything that won't eat them goes.
Only potential problem I can see there is the water currents, I'm not sure the aquatic frogs would like them.
These pleco tanks are filtered with Eheim 2217s canister filters and one tank has live plants.

Hello SA and welcome to FF! Also a fish keeper with 50 years experience in FW and SW, mostly breeding SA & CA cichlids. Last year I got my first frog and after a break due to health reasons got me another one couple months ago. From reading your post can see you are still undecided so maybe want to take a look at these articles before taking the plunge. First this one to see if any species attracts you more than others: Frog Forum - Choosing a Frog . Then since you mentioned Grey's take a look at this one: Frog Forum - Gray Tree Frog Care and Breeding . For aquatics like ADF or the larger ACF this is good reading: http://www.frogforum.net/care-sheet-...warf-frog.html.

Mixing frogs and fish is a risky endeavor because they prey on each other and share many parasites which could get your frogs sick. Both ADF and the larger ACF do prefer zero to little current. What I've read some members do, is point the canister filter spraybar to glass wall and minimize currents that way. Be aware that both species require around 10-12 in. of max. water level above substrate so your filter needs to be able to handle that if in a tall tank.

IRT Clown Plecos (great little fish) maybe it will work with the ADF but not the ACF; which will grow large enough to try and eat a Clown Pleco with disastrous results for both. Plants will be fine with both aquatic species and if plants grow to top they will climb above them and hang around the leaf canopy.

Hope this info helps! I find frogs similar to fish and there are all kinds of them with very interesting behaviors and attitudes. Have a nice week !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

    Yep, undecided.
Looks like the aquatic frog/clown pleco combo might not work out. At the very least it seems the filter intake needs to be covered up to protect the frogs. And that potential parasite issue is probably not something I want to risk with my plecos.

As for the Grey tree frogs, if I am correct and they don't readily eat dried and prepared food, that makes them the kind of pet I'll have to re-home every time I leave. Leaving to go camping for two weeks during the summer is almost guaranteed.

I live alone and the fish here are left with automatic feeders when I go away. I've got two goals I'm training for right now; finishing the long trail and doing a cross state camping/bike trip. I can't have any critter during the summer hiking season that cannot be left during these times. I'm not sure how difficult these frogs are to re-home on a seasonal basis for backpacking.

You can quarantine your frogs (like with any fish addition) for 30 days to ensure they do not bring illness to tank. Other than ADF/ACF; most frogs and toads will need life moving foods to get a feeding response. Some can be trained to eat from tweezers and respond to moving "prey" by your hand movement. Re-homing a frog every time you go on vacation might not work out right, and you can't leave them on feeders like fish. Options available are to find someone to care for them while you are gone and I recommend that someone has amphibian or reptile experience.

Think the best option you have now is to set-up a tank for ADFs. Good luck !

I will read more more about the ADF then. I have a 15 gal. tank empty right now that used to house a male betta if I wanted to keep these not with my plecos.

Also now I've gotten the idea of keeping aquatic salamanders.
We have these native brown salamanders here and I noticed someone here was keeping them in an aquarium by browsing the site. We used to keep some of those brown salamanders outside in a wading pool. I'm not sure about the ethical issues of going into the wild and collecting them anymore.

No hurry to get any new pets here, besides my new goldfish I got last week just decided to come down with a case of ich.
