Red face New Excited Owner READY FOR ALL KINDS OF ADVICE (just no stupid ones)

Whats up guys! My name is Jaytee and I just got a green pacman frog (that's what the employee told me).

Well I'm really excited about these guys because they're pure awesome and they're also considered lucky animals in my religion.

So enough with the intros! How about a little advice... My humidity won't go higher than 60.. my temperature is fine which is at 80. I misted the tank to try and cause more humidity but it the gauge wouldn't budge. I'm not sure if it's broken or what but it's got me a little worried because I want this guy to live the FULL LIFE.

    What I have right now:
Tank: 10 Gallon with water bowl filled to the frog's elbow.
    Food: Crickets + Calcium/D3 Powder
Substrate: Which I didn't know was a mistake, Green Frog Moss. (I'm definitely going to go out tomorrow and get coconut fiber)

Alright so guys give me some advice on the humidity!!

Edited: How come my pacman is brown? and his nose is green?...

When you get the eco earth just get a new bucket and put about half the bag into the bucket and
add warm de-chlorinated not hotter than 80F slowly and mix and add water slowly until
it clumps together in your hand with out any water coming out.

If you add too much water don't worry just pick up a hand full and squeeze out that excess water
    and place in the tank.
smooth it out but don't pack it down keep it loose.

What are you using for heat?
your frog needs day time temps around 80-85F and night time 75-77F

I have many sources of heat and a hygrotherm controller to do the day and night time temps
I have a 75W ceramic heat element , infra red light bulb. and a Zoo med mini heat pad on a
1/4 thick sheet of glass that is almost as big as the bottom of the tank placed under the tank.
I did this so the bottom of the tank won't get too hot and burn the bum of my baby LOL

Thanks for the advice and response!

For heat I'm using a Zoo Med Halogen Lamp. Not sure which wattage.. I didn't check...

I was going to buy the heat pad, but some of the reptile store's employees told me it's not too safe to put it at the bottom of the tank because when it contacts the water it can crack the glass... so I'm not sure where to put that.

The temperature isn't a big problem for me because I live in Southern California and it's summer time right now so temperatures are NEARLY what he needs but I keep the lamp on in the day time if its not 80 degrees in his tank.
The humidity is the only problem I'm facing... Could it be from the POS Green Moss that I bought that's not holding the humidity? I know Spahgnum Moss and Coconut Fiber holds humidity very well.

    What's your take on that?

welcome to the forum Jaytee, that is right place to ask questions and get answers but you would get a better response if you swing by pacman section and ask a question here. by the way we would LOVE to see pics of your frog!

    as for your questions.

humidity- 2 things might be going on here - your gauge might be crappy ( what kind do you have?) as well where is it positioned? it gotta be in a dead centre of a back wall about 2 above the substrate, basically at the level where frog lives. there are a few things you can do get humidity where it needs to be, but first you have to be sure that you're getting correct humidity readings.

heat - you can use different heating devices - heat mat, heat cable, ceramic bulb or infrared bulb, but your halogen is not heat lamp, it is just visible light. HEVER use heating for under the tank for 2 reasons - it may burn the frog, as they like to burrow, as well, Louis you need to fix it - frog is burrowing to cool down as well as to hide, if a heat goes from a bottom, it will mess up with frog nature, simply speaking.

food - you have to get multivitamins and dust food once a week and ever second feeding - ca/vitD3 powder that you have, but do not use both powders together.

substrate - eco earth or plantation soil, wet but not mud like, you also need to cover 3 sides of the enclosure with something, static cling backgrounds are perfect for that. also place a few hide like things to make him feel safe, plastic plant, piece of cork, etc. Louis is already advised you to use dechlorinated water.

i would very strongly advise to get zoomed hydrotherm, plug it in a fogger ( you can make yourself or modify regular home one) and a heating ( i prefer 50W infrared lamps for smaller tanks), cover part of your tank top with plastic wrap, ducktape, plexiglass, and never have a headache about humidity or temps.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
