No sorry news paper has chemicals and inks.
Eco earth is not that expensive and only needs to be replaced once a month if that.
spot clean like cat litter and if you add a cleaning crew like spring tails that will
help.
Live plants also help.
The best way to know when to do a complete clean out is to use your nose.
If it starts to smell funky then it is time.
As for the lights you just have to be careful of any thing that you set it on top of that could melt.
that is why I would use CFL bulbs they don't get hot enough to melt plastic.
But heat lamps do.

you might want to look at this terrariums for less than $10.00
oh gotcha. hmm..would paper towels work? it isn't the money I'm worried about, it's cleanup! paper towels would make it so easy and clean!
if not, I'll definitely grab some coco fiber. How do such sticky little frogs walk on coco fiber without getting it all over themselves?
does petsmart sell the light you recommend?
thanks, but I am absolutely terrible at anything DIY!!
thanks so much for your help, i really appreciate it![]()

Reserve paper towels for when you need to set up a hospital tank for a sick frog.
the eco earth is the best. and not that difficult.
and yes they do get it allover them selves but they also clean them selves too.
What I did was to put down a small pice of aquarium airline tubing with a small sponge over the end of the tube
that end I put in the middle of the bottom of the terrarium to siphon out excess water.
Placed either expanded clay balls or you can use gravel that is about 1/2 inch diameter.
and lined the bottom with it. about 2 inches thick. then I got some non metallic screen and cut a pice to cover the gravel
and covered the gravel with the screen. That will keep the eco earth from falling in between the gravel.
and when it comes time to to a total change of the eco earth I just scoop out as much by hand and then lift the screen
to get the rest out.
If your frogs are healthy their droppings will be easy to spot clean.
The only thing I would buy at pet smart is feeder crickets.
you can get everything you need online and much cheaper.
oh my goodness that sounds super complicated! is there any sort of reptile mat that would be good, or is loose substrate the best option?

I have heard that the frogs feet can get stuck in the mat but never tried it.
