Hey all, names Rena. I've been in the fish keeping hobby for quite a few years now, started with Oscars, then went to African cichlids, then Discus, and now I have a 55g community tank, alittle bit of everything!! Well my husband works at a pool company and he found about 300+ tadpoles in the bottom of a pool which is under construction, just a puddle of water in the bottom of a linerless pool. He put some in a cup, not sure how many and brought em home. We've had em in a 20g tall tank for about 3 weeks now and some are getting their legs now, I dropped the water level last night and put in a decorative step to give the little guys with legs a break from all their swimming and they seem to be loving it. This morning I counted 15 with all 4 legs on top of the stone plus 2 stuck to the side of the glass above the water line. Now as far as what my hubby told me we have a mix of some kind of frogs and toads. Curious if anyone knows what we may have, heres a pic, i'll try to get more up soon!! Name: Frogs.jpg

My plan is to raise em up and let em go, I figure they have a better chance with us than in the bottom of the pool. Across the street from our house is wetlands and a few of our friends have ponds so finding homes for em won't be a problem!!

My biggest concern is what to feed em now that they have their legs? I've been feeding the tadpoles Reptomin Frog sinking granules since we got em, should I keep feeding them this or should I change it up now that they have their legs, doesn't seem like the little guys are eating.

Hello and welcome to FF! Once they morph to frogs will eat food that moves. No idea how big are froglets; but that could mean tiny pinhead crickets or even starting them on fruit flies. An easy food size formula is food length equal to distance between eyes or 1/2 mouth width.

Dusting food with calcium 2x and vitamins 1x a week on different days with skip day in between will help get them minerals they need while growing. I recommend Repashy or ReptoCal products.

We need pics to help ID; but if some are sticking to glass and their toes end in little disks are probably tree frogs, maybe Grey's. If ones on rocks looks different they might be something else than tree frogs, maybe Toads or other frogs. In the Care Article section there are sheets with info on their care. Hope this is not bad news; but if different species, might need to keep separate, good luck !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Trying to zoom in I am wondering if they might be toads? I can't see if they have tiny parotid gland or not.

Itty bitty frogs and toads can eat fruit flies and springtails. We fed our baby toadlets fruit flies, springtails, and aphids. We did also dust ours with calcium/vitamin D3 every other day and Herptivite one day a week.

I'll see if I can find an old picture.

As babies you can alter their tank to have moist paper towels as flooring (changed daily), a shallow water bowl only filled enough for them to sit in, and if they are tree frogs, branches to climb on. All outdoor rocks used should be boiled first. Branches should be baked in oven to kill any pests.

Ok, got some wingless fruit flies, they see em, go after em, and either miss when they try to get em or spit em out. We'll have to keep tryin till they get the hang of it, its just tough to keep the flies outta the water!!

Any luck in them catching the fruit flies?

Yes heather, I bought a decent size container and dump quite a few in everytime I feed them, some are eating and some aren't quite there yet. Those dumb fruit flies jump in the water and end up drowning, i'm thinking the tadpoles that are left are cleaning them up. BTW how often should I be feeding them?

feed them daily. if you have a spare tank you can use, you can transfer the morphed froglets to a tank lined with paper towels, as Heather suggested, then you don't have to worry about the fruit flies drowning. well, except in a water bowl. and btw, welcome to FF!

Sounds good, I have a 10g tank downstairs i'll put the froglets in tomorrow and i'll keep the tadpoles in the 20g till they get legs. When they all have legs i'll dig the gravel outta the 20g and transfer all the froglets into the bigger tank.....i'll try to get some pics of em after I transfer them to the 10g so maybe I can get these little guys ID'ed. Thanks for the advice all!!

Quick update, it seems that I have so many froglets that i'm losing about 1-2 a day, which I figured would happen. I'm feeding them plenty so its a free for all during feeding time. Some are bigger than others, and some are more aggressive when it comes to the fruit flies. On a side note my husband spent 2 days this week fishing the rest of the froglets out of the unlined pool at his work, he figured about 100 and theres still more, he's just setting them free in the tall grass!! Here's a pic from 3 days ago: Name: 923220_10200093868017671_117223028_n.jpg
