He only ever takes something from the tongs once each feeding, but he'd get upto 4 medium crickets in one feeding. He would eat about twice a week. I didnt wanna bother him too much with measuring him, so I took this picture with a quarter. Notice his one eye is still half closed
Is that all he would eat or all you would offer him? Twice a week is not enough food for a baby and could have been the reason that he became stunted. Babies must be fed daily and need calcium every other feeding and a multivitamin once a week for excellent health and growth. I'm sure poor genetics play a significant role here too, but not receiveing enough nutrition during crutial growth stages can result in the frog not reaching its full potential and in the worst case failing to thrive.
Do the medicated bath and we will take necessary steps afterwards. Besure to pour some of the bath over his back too.
No no! Thats not all I offer, thats all he takes! I offer every day! Im getting the things for his bath after breakfast and will let you know how he does
Thanks for pic; it does appear stunted. Here is product I recommended earlier: Repta Boost Insectivore/Carnivore . Would do the medicated bath Colleen/Jerrod recommended to try and perk frog up and then use the ReptiBoost. Also, do you have a veterinary with frog experience in your area?
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !
Thanks all, he's soaking in his pedialyte honey bath now, hope he'll feel better
Well he doesnt look too bad, but he's still not eating..
Thats ok. It may take a few baths to give him enough energy to move around. Did he atleast become a little more active?
Bath him everyday once per day. Add honey every 3rd bath, but always use the Pedialyte everytime you soak him.
Next step will be force feeding which we can address tomorrow after his soak. You will be using the Repta Boost.
Also I have found during soaks to put a small towel around the container this will
keep the frog from trying to jump at the sides of the container if the container is clear.
also it will help keep the solution from cooling down two quickly in cooler areas.
I am a new keeper of Packmans and thanks to this forum I have learned a lot.
I hope your little one perks up and gets well soon.
Keep us posted.
BTW thanks to another member here I have started a colony of dubia roaches.
I have heard that varying the diet of any frog is a really good thing.
the only foods I have heard to stay away from are meal worms and super worms.
That they can cause impaction.
The thread just stopped, how is Darwin?
Im not sure, he hasnt moved since I got him out of his bath yesterday, but looks like the eye I can get a look at without disturbing him is mostly open. I'll bathe him again later today
He just had his second bath. He looks a little more active maybe, its hard to say, but he's still not eating at all. I rub it against his lips, what used to work, but he just keeps his mouth shut, he's also not interested in crickets, even if they climb on his face, and I even tried a pinky, which he used to love. He doesnt get annoyed and bites when I rub it in his face, he's never done that. Should I forcefeed him?
Sure do
Note that this best done with two people. One to hold the frog so it cannot back away and the other to do the force feeding. You will need to have the dose of Repta Boost ready before hand. This is also best done on the floor with layers of moist paper towels spread out for the frog to be placed on so that there is no way for it to jump from a high place and hurt itself. Lock all other pets away so no harm comes to the frog. This means dogs, cats, ect.
You will be using a plastic spoon positioned upsidedown to gently pry his mouth open. Place the spoon between the upper and lower jaw on the side of the mouth. Positioned in the middle between the hinge of the jaws and the snout. You will need to apply gentle downward pressure while sliding down towards the snout. This normaly stimulates the frog to open it's mouth. You will habe to quickly and carefully insert the seringe and squit it's contents into the frog's mouth. The frog will do the rest. You will need to do this daily until he can eat on his own.
oh.. back to the store for plastic spoons..
I keep checking back for his progress report. So worried about him
Me too
it seems that Grif and Carlos got you covered.
a few Q for you:
-how big he was when you got him a year ago? how much did he grow since you have it?
- how his poop looked like when you last saw it?
careful with reptiboost, do not squirt big quantities fast, make sure a frog is swallowing it.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
if you look at the picture with the quarter, he was about the size of that quarter when I got him, and that was last september. His pooped looked good last time I saw it, a little hard to explain, but consistent and a little moist, maybe about half an inch long, like a thick short worm? Please forgive me the bad descriptors, Im not a native speaker
