Whites Tree Frog / Crickets

Hi, thank`s for reading this thread.

I`v just noticed a baby cricket running about my tank. I`v given it a spray to see if any more would jump about but nothing. There will be more or more to come.

Question is: will they do any harm to the frog in numbers?

I`v got a dish with Bug Grub for the couple of adults that are in there now.

I'm new as well, too many crickets may bite, especially if you have the baby frogs. Few at a time is safer. Read an earlie thread party keeps extra crickets in a covered candy dish.

My Frog had just a week, prefers to snooze daytime in a butter box, then active at night. Box opening wash pushed against the glass as I left to the store, managed to move it an daytime enjoying the enclosure, missed the entry activity, sure it was amusing.

It is really best to remove all un-eaten crickets daily and return them to the cricket bin to feed. You might consider " bowl " feeding as this would help you keep track of how much your frog is eating as well as be able to properly dust w \ calcium and vitamins on a routine schedule.

Lynn Is completely correct as usual.
But just in case you don't know what "bowl" feeding is, I will expand on her comment.

Using a small glass bowl 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter with a lip edge of at least 1in.
Placed sunken down in the substrate so the lip edge is just above the substrate.
The reason I like to slightly burry the bowl is to lessen the confusion to the frog.
I have watched mine try to eat the crickets though the glass, Comical as it is it still is frustrating for the frog
Crickets can't climb smooth clean glass. And they aren't smart enough to just jump out.
So the feeder crickets can be placed in the bowl and not have free range and possibly
bite your babies like Wnppmy mentioned.

Apologize I'm new, so bare with me.

As these are White's Frogs and active as mine at night would it be better to have crickets placed in during night activity, and removed during day?

Mine stays in his butter box snoozing daytime, perhaps not a normal behavior or practice with the box on my part.

I have a question and a suggestion.
Do you have a drainage tube to drain the water out of the bottom of the Exo terra.
BTW that is the exact model I have and I love it.
I have the CFL hood for it.
I would get some aquarium background cover for at least the back and the side that is next to the wall.
to help your little one feel more secure.
also would get some non metallic fine scree to place above the gravel drainage layer to keep
the coco fiber from falling down into the drainage gravel.
That will make total replacement of the coco fiber much easier.

Whites are nocturnal and will hide during the day.

What I did to kinda fool my whites into being active when I was still awake.
Is to use a couple of timers and some special lights.

I learned this trick from another member Deeishealthy.

I have one timer on the day light a couple of 65K white CFL's set so it would come on at 07:00 and off
at 17:00.
I found a small LED light bar at Lowes that was part of a lighting system that could change colors.
it had what is called RGB LED's meaning that they can produce red , blue , green light and varying the intensity
of each color would give you just about every color under the rainbow.
It cost $20.00 and it didn't have the controller. But that wasn't a problem for me.
I figured out how to just to power the red LED's and I put the light wand in the same housing that the CFL's are.
to keep things neat.
The red led's stay on 24/7 and that isn't an issue since frogs cant see the red spectrum of light as I under stand.
So from 17:00 to the time I go to bed the frogs think it is night time and I can see them hunting.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I am a engineer and love to tinker with this stuff.

Not sure how i would go about the drainage pipe as it`s all enclosed ??

I`v two canopy`s, one with a 5.0 UVB and the other a Sun Glow bulb. I`v also got a UTH on the floor ( outside ) for humidity.

I never thought about the fine screen, great idea.

I`ll get them side`s and back covered ASP.

The cricket`s are still in the small dishes so i`ll feed him that way from now on.

white'a are primarily a nocturnal frog. although some of my 5 will be active at different times of the day, mostly at early evening. i feed in the early evening when i know one is up and at 'em, and her activity stirs the other ones up and the carnage starts.....lol just remember, they are kind of like people, each has it's own patterns and persona. some are more active during the day than other, but all are active at night, if that makes sense.

Hi guy`s, thanks so much for your time and knowledge, it`s really appreciated.

He`s an adult male, around 3. I`v put two small bowls out with a cricket in each to see if they can escape, one is 1 1/2inches deep and the other 2inches deep

Louis i`v a few baby`s here but only the one frog, he did have a partner to hitch a lift off but sadly dies over a year ago
