Hi there, new to this forum. I apologize in advance if this "solution" or problem has been posted somewhere already but I could not find a basic help or health section.
Hoping someone can give me some insight or point me in the right direction. We are currently raising some tadpoles (your basic frog and toad found in the northeast). We started them at the egg stage for our children and have been caring for them diligently and plan to release once developed. It's mainly for a learning experience.
That said, one of our frog tads who has just started developing his hind legs has one leg that is very very dark red and has what appears to be a bubble at the top portion of where the leg is developing. The other tad does not have this so I know it's not normal. I would like to know if there is anything that I may be able to do or is this just a very unfortunate act of nature and this tad is not developing properly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I can post a picture if it will help. I did take a few yesterday (but must wait until I am home this evening to post.)
Thank you so much for your help in advance. I want to try to do what I can for this little guy/gal.
Lisa
First off, if you are keeping that tad with others, separate them IMMEDIATELY and place the sick tadpole in a quarantine tank with dechlorinated water.
To me, that sounds like either a case of Red leg or a bacterial infection, in either case antibiotics may be needed. However, a picture would solidify this.
You may want to pick up some neosporin WITHOUT painkiller, as well as some Baytril or Bactine from your nearby Vet. I also recommend you get some Melafix.
I'm unexperienced with treating tadpoles, but there will certainly be someone on here who can help you out.
Oh, and welcome to the Frog Forum!

Thank you so much for the insight. I've done a little research on red leg now that you have mentioned it and it is quite possible that's what it is. Their water is fine (I have a full test kit), temperature is the same as the tadpoles would see in their own environment as I'm trying to keep them as close to nature around us as possible. I will isolate him when I get home, but other than that I have clue if I can do anything else as this is a tadpole and not yet a frog. He is still eating only tad food and has not "morphed" to the stage yet where he is out of the water. Medicating a tadpole I'm thinking is going to be near impossible, but I'll see what i can find that may help.
Sorry no picture right now. I did not get your response until this morning after I was back at work. I should have just posted last night! :-/
If you want, I can contact some much more experienced members of this Forum to help you out.
By 'tad food', do you mean the "Frog pellets" you see at petstores. If so, I recommend feeding them boiled, finely chopped, and finally frozen pieces of lettuce, as well as thawed bloodworms. "Frog pellets" are very low in nutrition, and I always recommend variety in the diet of any frog.
We will also need photos to identify the species of frog/toad, as well as confirm whether the ailment is Red leg.
Separating the sick tadpole from the healthy tadpoles should be the first thing you do. We don't want the virus/ailment spreading to the others.
Keep us posted. We'll help you as much as we can.
