Thread: A few questions from a new ACF Owner

Default A few questions from a new ACF Owner

I recently adopted an African Clawed Frog from a family friend and I have a few questions,

    1) How high can a ACF jump out of water? Right now there is between 1.5-2in between the gap around the filter and the water.
    2) Does the filter need to be on 24/7? Or can I turn it off while I sleep?
    3) The tank came with AED lights, can these harm the frog? Or will he/she be fine with them on during the day and off during the night?
    4) What time of the day should they be feed, or does it not matter?

I would gretaly appreciate it if someone can answer my questions.

I'm presuming you have a Xenopus laevis and not one of the smaller or dwarf species? If so, this might help you: http://www.frogforum.net/care-sheet-...are-sheet.html.

Recommend you keep it on. The beneficial bacteria in the filter need oxygen to reduce ammonia and nitrites. Turning it off will limit their populations due to no water circulation.

    3) The tank came with AED lights, can these harm the frog? Or will he/she be fine with them on during the day and off during the night?
You mean LED lights? If so they should be OK to use during day. Do provide frogs hiding places so they feel secure.

    4) What time of the day should they be feed, or does it not matter?
Would feed them early morning or late afternoon at your convenience. Feeding periodicity depends on frog size.

I would gretaly appreciate it if someone can answer my questions.
    Hope this helps !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Ok, thanks for replying so soon, though I have one more question,

Is there a way I can make my filter quieter, such as putting a sponge at the end so all the water doesn't cascade into one place. It really seemed to be stressing her out, she was swimming back and forth at the front of the tank, and she looks like she is prolapsing now, (I've got a different thread asking about the prolapse). Any ideas?
