Hey every one,
My self im new to Frog Care. So i been reading every thing i can find to care for frogs. My wife loves them. So she ordered a Dumpy Tree frog from Feeders Supply store. Because we was not able to find any Tree Frogs in the stores. When she got him, she told me he had no water in the Box he was shpped in. On top of that he has issues with some of his front toes. She still got him, even that there was looking to be some thing wrong. We did not want him to stay at the store. They told us they do not sell and they keep the frogs in cages that are 6" by 6" very small. So we want him to have a good house. Its been about a week, and i do not see him move alot, buy my wife tells me he does. But today my wife went to change his water and saw that hie back left leg was just hanging down and he had light green spots on him. He can move his leg but looks like he is mostly dragging it. Plus on light green spot looks like its a Cut do not know.
This is a image of the back and the leg thats having issues.
This is the Image of his toes.
Me and my wife want to give him the best home we can and help him. We have been dusting his food. Any help will be greatfull. Thank you
This poor baby needs a lot of love.
First thing I would do is to setup a hospital for it.
Moist paper towels for substrate. Water dish and heat source.
A soak in solution of de chlorinated water with 10% unflavored pedolite warmed to 80F
And bactine to treat the open sores.
And a visit to the vet asap.
Agreed, this little guy has been through the wars. We need to hop into action.
Louis has it right on, although some plants would reduce stress for the little guy, and a lid so you don't have a frog escapee once he's healed.
You can either buy an amphibian/reptile water conditioner, or Reverse osmosis water for the 1/10 unflavored pedialyte - 9/10 dechlorinated water soak. Regular tap water, if untreated, may kill him.
For this, like Louis said, he'll need a trip to the Exotic Vet ASAP.
I would suggest feeding him some earthworms, either store-bought or from a pesticide/fertilizer/additive free compost/garden. They're so much more nutritious than crickets, and easier to digest too. You can chop them into smaller chunks (ugh, I know) if he can't eat the full worm.
Fingers crossed for the little guy.

I have some Nightcrawers, so i cut some up for him. My wife was telling me he was dry when she got him from the store. We are looking for Exotic Pet Vets in our area. Is there a site that will have some listing to help us find one.
You can ask your local pet store about a vet as well, I asked who they've used. They recommended my Vet who did all she could for my Frog.
Good Luck, Hope He/She has a quick recovery.
Frog is not getting much better. Trying to get in to a vet. But my son is sick as well.
I got a tank to turn in to a hospital tank. What all do I need to do to make it right for him? Plus I do not think he is eating. What can be done to force or make him eat?
The frog needs warmth , humidity , water source. , a place to hide to lessen stress.
You will need these basic things
A thermometer/hygrometer get the kind that can be placed with suction cups
so you can place it anywhere in the tank.
You need a good screen lid that will allow light and air to pass.
you can also use a cloth to cover part of it to keep heat and moisture in.
A heat source can be as simple as a floor lamp that has a flexible neck or a desk lamp
with a regular 60-100W light bulb depending on how cold it is in your home.
you need to keep the tank around 80F and the humidity above 75%
If you keep the paper towels moist that won't be an issue.
And change the paper towels and clean the water dish daily.
A water dish that is easy for it to get into. for now a dish that is 1/2in deep is good.
That should be filled with dechlorinated water. You can use the same dechlorinator for fish ( also the paper towels )
Do not use untreated tap water. no matter if it is city or well water.
As for a hide you can use a coconut hut or a half round log both can be found at
a pet store. This will be one of the best things you can do. stress is a big deal for these guys.
As for force feeding.
before you do that try a honey solution soak.
Honey is anti bacterial and will give some much needed carbs that can boost
its appetite and give it some energy to try to eat.
I use a clean 1quart Chinese take out container with a lid for my soaks.
Use a pen or a Phillips screw driver to poke some holes in the lid from the inside out
so the sharp edges are not inside where the frog is.
Use unflavored plain honey only two to three drops in just enough water to get the shoulders
of your frog. ( you don't want to drown it)
The water again should be dechlorinated and warmed to 80F.
Have another container with just dechlorinated water as a rinse. at the same temp 80F (nothing is more shocking than a cold dip.)
Let it soak for 5 to 10 min. in the honey mixture.
then put it in the rinse for a minute or two.
Put the frog back in the hospital tank and let it settle for an hour or so
and offer food and see if it will eat.
Before you go much further I hope that you have taken the frog to the vet.
I strongly suggest that you get a vets help.
Ok thank you. I'm going too try that after work. My wife is post to be setting every thing up with the vet. As of right now we are post to go thuresday. So I want to do what ever I can for him before then.
It's sad to me that stores would ship a frog in a box, plus with no water. And even ship a frog that may be sick. With out taking care of him first before he is sold.
I have never bought a frog via the web or from a store that didn't have a healthy frog on display.
The frogs I did have came from a local pet shop that had a nice vivaurum setup and three healthy frogs. I got one from them
and the two others from a local owner that couldn't take care for them.
Sadly I had to also give them up since I couldn't get my wife to take care of the feeding properly.
Since I trave 90% for my job.
Good luck.
Keep us posted
Same here never ordered one before this. I think we will stay with Petsmart some have vets inside.
My wife is not the best with things like this. So a lot falls on me and I work 12 hours aday. She loves frogs and I really hope every thing works out for the little guy. I'm going to set up every thing I can to help him.
I'm greatful to find this site where so many are welling to help me with this. So I like to say " thank you to all of you"
Awwwwwwwwwwwwww so sad, I love Dumpies, they are so loving and adorable. I have a very local and close store near me that specializes in Frogs and Toads, I will take your post along with the pictures in to them and see what they say.
I hope he does well as I am sure he will, keeps us up to date please.
Bad news guys he did not make it. My wife told me before she left for work she changed the water and cleaned him and got him to eat a worm that was cut in to small parts. But when she got home he had passed away.
She is beating her self up some for not able to do more.
R.I.P. Sheldon
Thank you for everyone's help with this sad time. I love this site and it gives me a place to read and learn more about frogs. Thank you again
Sorry for Sheldon's death.
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
NOOOOOOOOOOOO, I am so sorry to hear this stuff. Im sorry.
I am sorry to hear that.
Well when you are ready to have another frog you know where to go for tips on care
and more importantly where to show it off.
We love pictures and success stories.
I can't wait until I can properly care for one I have the complete set up ready to go
I have 7 ACF's in the aquarium to the left and the exo terra (empty) at the right.
But hope not too long.
I'm sorry to hear about Sheldon
Please don't be discouraged from keeping frogs. They are great animals to care for, fun and interesting.
If you do want to keep another frog, we can help advise you where to get one, and what species is good for a beginner frog keeper.
Once again, I'm sorry this happened.

We are going to wait before we get our next frog. I am a DIY guy and i was building a bigger and better tank for Sheldon. So we are going to wait until this tank is done and full set up before we get a new frog. Plus we will be looking around at places to look at the care of the frogs we see before we pick one out.
sorry to hear the news about your frog, i would however report the store you bought the frog from
