Pros and Cons of Letting a Young WC Toad Go Free

I'm curious, do you think you'll continue keeping toads? I think you should, especially if you find another like you found Banjo, out on the road or in danger.

It's kind of far, we're talking a 12hr drive. Nature Preserves, sanctuaries, and forests, are about an hr or less away.

I still don't know what I'll do with Banjo, she's been burrowed for a day, and I'm not disturbing her. I don't want to lose her at all, and if I'm still with Paul and find another, unless it was injured, no I wouldn't take it in.

In general, I have to grow more out of that childhood/teenage habit of taking in the outdoors. Banjo was the 1st time I'd done that in over a decade, but shows I need to learn better restraint. Not that I haven't enjoyed the **** out of her. And hope to continue to do so, if at all possible.

Never loose that part of yourself, it is who you are.
It is not at all childish, it is the mothering in you to take care of what ever needs it.

I know relationships require some compromises but that has to be on both sides.

In my case I will have to wait until I have a job that doesn't have me travel 99%
before I really can keep the frogs I want.

That is the compromises I have had to make for my wife and my job.

So it might be better for Banjo and your family to part ways but in the
mannor that both can live with.

On the other hand you can do what I want to do in my back yard.
Make a habitat that will support her and hopefully draw others.
I don't know if that will be possible for you where you will be living but it is an alternative
Who knows you might get to see her.

Now there ya go, create a place for Banjo if you can. Once they find a place that has a good food supply they pretty much hang in that area. If possible, you could build an outside vivarium for her, and the friends she invites in. What ever you choose to do I'm confident it will be the right choice. And FYI, it's not childish at all, I'm 53 years old and have been rounding up critters since I was 4.

Well, if you do decide to let Banjo go, we'll still be here for you on the Frog Forum. And I wouldn't consider taking in animals from the outdoors childish. Lots of people take in animals from the wild. I know many people, including a lot of adults, who've done such, and don't consider it childish. It's one of the reasons I ended up keeping my Gnag and Bumpy.

I like the idea of creating a little home for Banjo, maybe a small pond with plants in your garden? You could visit her whenever you wanted, and she'd be safe under your eye.

A nature reserve or park sounds good. If you do decide that that's the best choice, I'd place her near a pleasant, year-round pond, where very few people go near.

I hope the best for you two, and like Gail said, I'm confident that whatever you decide to do will be the right choice for you and Banjo.

I meant mostly that i did a lot of taking in animals as a child and teenager, not that it was childish. But it IS something that needs to be done thoughtfully and with consideration.

Told Paul if I planted flowers all over his yard, we'd never have to mow again. That'd mean no more chemicals too. Both of which happen frequently in the warm months... and I suggested a pond in his yard already, too. Standing water means mosquitoes tho, and they really like me. Banjo couldn't eat them all (or maybe she could), but maybe I'd make new toad friends. A pond won't happen, but hopefully a garden will. I enjoyed that here last year.

Still don't know what I'll do, Banjo is still burrowed, but I saw her. Maybe Paul won't want to take the drive and she'll be part of our family, as she's already part of mine.

Giving that you are pretty far north the pond would have to be kinda deep so a mosquito loving fish could survive.

This confused me when I read it last night. Didn't know fish ate mosquitoes. I should carry one in a bucket around my neck. But he won't let me dig up his yard and put in a pond. I already asked. Even the prospect of ice skating in the winter didn't entice him.
