This frog grew from a tadpole we found in Va. It took from August to April to turn into a frog so we are wondering if it is a bull frog? The tadpole was pretty big, but the frog is a little smaller than my thumb. Any ideas on ID? Thanks!
From your picture it looks like it might has dorsolateral folds? Those are ridges that start just behind each eye and run down the back. Is so, that should make it a Northern Green Frog (they can also spend a winter or two as a tadpole).
Have a look at Frogs and Toads of Virginia The folds are a key feature two distinguish between the species (both have quite variable colouration), and that webpage has a good picture of a Bullfrog and a Northern Green Frog so you can see what the folds look like and know what to look for.
Thanks - here's a tadpole photo if that helps. I can't decide if that looks like the Northern Green tadpole or not?
After looking at a lot of pics, I think you are right and this is a Northern green frog - thank you so much!!!!
You're welcome!
