I'm getting a small group of Mossy Frogs in January they are fresh out of the water now. I'm thinking of getting a group of 4 maybe more if I can spare the funds....
Anyway I digress I plan on using a 50 gallon breeder that is 48 inches long by 21 inches high, I want to do 75% water for them as I know adults love water. I plan to have the water level be 5 inches deep with a shallow swamp on the right side of the tank. I'm going to use GS foam with some plant nets and cover it with a mixture of cocofiber and ABG using Titlebond III
I'm going to use a filter that will run a hose up behind a drip wall where I will split the hose into two. One for a drip wall to hide the hose which I will put small stones and pieces of cork bark in the GS to make it look natural.. The second hose will exit at the top and make a small stream where it will pass into a small bowl forming a pool. The edge of the pool will be filed down then sanded to direct the flow into another pool. This will happen with 4 pools until the final pool is larger than the first three. Along the edge of the stream I want to use mossy, algae to give it a natural look.
I liked in Amanda's build the use of a cave, so I plan to use the under my last pool so it seems like there is a cave behind the waterfall. This cave will be partially submerged about 1.5 inches.

I want to place a couple plants on the back wall and then on the small land part. Think ferns and a creeping ivy. For the land not sure yet.
For the water section I want to put some live plants under water, with a small colony of tetras or similar fish. I was thinking of putting bamboo in there for a place for eggs or for frogs to hang out. I will put a piece of wood that has multiple branches coming off it in the water, and a piece of wood in the swamp with maybe a plant.
here is a rough sketch.
Looking forward to seeing pictures of your build and frogs. Good decision chosing mossies, they are really fun and beautiful frogs!
Put something in there to get tannin-rich water (dark color), oak leaves, cork...
From my experience...plan for 50/50 usage. Mine are all over the place and I see them less in the water then on the glass, the plants, or the background. Mine also always perch in a dry spot for the day cycle.
WOW and thank you!!! I feel absolutely honored that my tank is your inspiration. I commented back to you on my thread about my pool.
If I had posted my HORRIBLE pictures of my rough drawing of my build, it would have been identical to this drawing. HA!!!
I will caution you about the weight of the lower pool (well pools in total) and proper support of it. That was a huge concern with my pools and something to think about.
Let me know how I can help, if you need it!!!
Thanks I've built a bunch of tanks with pools before just supported by GS this time I'm going to use egg crate. Thanks for the tip about 50/50 land. Maybe I'll rethink the cave if they don't use it and yes they lay their eggs close to the aster on sticks or rocks. Hoping to start this tank the first week of December.
What plants or algae did you use in the small pools and the shallow swamp are?
I have java moss and hydrocotyle in the waterfall areas and crypt species in all of the bog areas.
Alright cool I want to get something to crawl across the back wall was thinking an ivy of some sort and a couple ferns too
I have no luck with some plants so these are the ones that are currently doing well. I do have an ariod, a creeping fig sprig or two, and one other plant that is escaping me at the moment that is also growing on the back wall as well.
If you have a picture its a dracenae
So I have an idea how many pieces if egg crate did you use, and did you cover the egg crate with weed paper or mosquito proof screen. I figured weed paper since the screen would be underwater.
I don't have any dracenae. The plant in the upper center planter is a airplane plant, if that is what plant you are speaking of.
I used less then one sheet in this build. I cover mine is some heavy duty weed paper that I had on hand from my work. It is about 4 times thicker then normal stuff. I used it below the water line to keep the fish and frogs out from under the land mass and anywhere the substrate may fall into the water.
I had planned to use mosquito screen but im thinking it may rust underwater.
No daughter today so going to start the tank today just putting the eggcrate in, no filter and only one can of GS foam haha
Tank holds water just put 6 inches in which is more than I plan on using. Better to be safe than sorry, have done left over wood and mopan Also have some tree fern panel pieces I want to put on the drip wall.
I couldn't find anything that I thought would be shallow yet large enough to make small pools. Other than these small food dishes. Would these work?
Finished the egg crate thank god, stuff is a pain. But I figured I can use coconut halves for the pools. Just have to get a few from Mike over at glassbox tropicals. Just going to cover it with weed paper, and figure out what to use for the substrate in the water section. I'll most likely use ABG for the land portion. The top of the stream I'm going to make a drip wall and GS a piece of fern panel and small river rocks to make it look natural.
I have decided if I want to do 2 or 3 plants in tge back wall
