Hi - we just got a load of new office plants and this guy came along for the ride on a kind of rubber plant from Florida, apparently. He will find a new home with someone here if not poisonous. Any ideas on what kind of frog this is and is it likely to be poisonous?
Thanks.
Jeff
It looks like a Cuban treefrog (Osteopilus septentrionalis) to me. The plants coming from Florida makes it even more likely.
I second that motion. Definately a Cuban Tree Frog! When Kurt comes online he can give you all the details. Of course others can too but Kurt is the GURU!
Osteopilus septentrionalis is the most likely canidate, but I will not make a positive ID without further pictures, preferably from different angles. They are an introduced species to southern Florida and have been frequent stow-a-ways amongst plant and produce shipments out of the area.
If indeed it is Osteopilus septentrionalis, then you would definitely have a toxic frog, but not dangerously so. If handling the frog, avoid touching your eyes or mouth, and wash your hands afterwards. If you have cuts upon your hands, you might want to wear surgical gloves and wash your gloved hands before handling the frog. The powders on these gloves can be toxic to frogs. Like I said, they are not dangerously toxic, but their skin toxins can irritate the eyes and mucus membranes.
On the plus side, they make good captives. They are easy to care for and have good appetites. Their care would be the same as any other treefrog.
At this point I am not 100% sure it is a Cuban treefrog, Osteopilus septentrionalis. More pictures are needed.
Looks like a Cuban to me.
