Pyxie Setup Help

Hello Sheldon! If space is a problem you could go for 20L and hope frog is a female. A 40B is a better choice since it can fit a grown male (possibly what you got) in it. Those tanks normally sell for $120-$140 locally so $40 is a good deal. With 40B my recommendation is a split set-up with 60/40 water/land area. If you look at set-up threads in African Bullfrog section will come across some describing their enclosures and get ideas from them. Good luck !

I'm sorry but I am unfamiliar with a 40 "B". What is that? I was under the impression that the pyxie would not be full size in a year. Is that incorrect? If it is going to be full size in 9-12 months I would rather pick up a 100 gallon with stand on Craig's list. I already have a 150 gallon Fluval canister filter ready to go. The frog is calling at night. It's too small to be sexed, but it sounds just like the call John has posted on the care sheet, not sure if the females can make this noise when young or just males? Thanks so much for the info...obviously I need the help!

A 40B is a 40 gallon breeder tank with dimensions of 36Lx18Wx18D. Called a breeder because of fish breeders using that size (and 30Bs) to breed and raise fish. IMO that's about the smallest you can keep a grown male African Bullfrog. If you prefer to get a 20L now and latter upgrade to a much larger tank like you state; that is up to you. Reason I recommend getting the larger 40B is that buying a tank and accessories (top, filter, heating, light, etc.) once is cheaper in the long run. Also; sometimes the best laid plan to upgrade tank later (for large growing animals) sometimes go awry leaving both animal and owner in a compromised situation.

Thanks for your quick response! I have floor space, but not shelf space, so I think I may go for a larger lifelong enclosure with a stand. It just makes sense. Thanks so much for your help!

Woo Hoo, I found a 40 B at my local Petco for $40. Think I'm going for that for now. Found a 60 1/2L x 18 1/2W x 24 1/2T for $170 at my local exotic fish store. They say I can order at any time....gonna have to do some measuring and rearranging, but that will most likely be our final step! Love my frogs!

I would stick to a 20g long. This is of course just my thoughts, but a 40g breeder is huge for just one frog even if he is a male. In my experience keeping different reptiles and amphibians over the years, animals can easily be stressed out with a too large of an enclosure. I have a 40g breeder, but i have 3 adult males in it and surprising they are very happy when some might consider it a bit over crowded. If you were to get a 20g long and split it 60/40 with water being the 40%, he would do just fine. Going off of the care sheet listed here, they say a minimal 15 Gallon enclosure for an adult male, anything over that is plus, but a 40g breeder is a large tank to fit in your home as well. I know mine takes up a large area in my living room.
