Recommend get hold of the law at your State website and read it carefully. Probably will find the loophole stores are using. As an example, Red Ear and similar turtles can't be sold here... unless for educational purposes. Local pet stores have tubs with them and a little note stating "they are sold for educational purposes" !
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog !

Did you mention to the Fish and Game people that some places sell them in California? It's possible no one actually noticed but you'd expect larger reputable public sellers to have looked into this. Small pet stores around me often have illegal insects for sale (in Canada, almost all exotics insects are illegal to keep), and there's no problem as long as the right/wrong person doesn't notice..

You might check out California Laws Regarding Reptiles and Amphibians they have some info about importing species at the bottom of the page (and a link to more complete official info). It looks like there are only a few non-natives that aren't allowed to be imported into California, and Greys and Peepers aren't on the list so that's confusing. Selling might be a different story though. Wading through government regulations is never fun, but you might have to do just that.

Does anyone there actually sell Spring Peepers? I wouldn't expect them to be a popular pet at all. Skittish and the potential of being disruptively loud.

Brian- No no one sells spring peepers... I personally grew up listening to them as I sleep and i loved it. So i wanted to actually have a few just for me and possibly breed if people wanted ON REQUEST only.

So did further research and according to that regulation any frog is allowed in california to be shipped and possessed in california except for the following species:

    (A) Family Bufonidae -Toads: Bufo marinus, Bufo paracnemis, Bufo horribilis (Giant toad or marine toad group) and all other large toads from Mexico and Central and South America-(D). (B) Family Pipidae -Tongueless Toads:

    1. Genus Xenopus (Clawed frog)-(D).
    (C) Family Ambystomatidae-Mole Salamanders:

    1. Genus Ambystoma (tiger salamanders) (D).
    (D) Family Leptodactylidae -Neotropical Frogs:

    1. Eleutherodactylus coqui -Commom Coqui or Coqui frog (D).

I will have to find another regulation on sales though... SO this still helps me =P That person i spoke with was just inexperienced =/

I don't understand any of this. They Grey's aren't native to California so you can't sell them or breed them. But red-eyes aren't even from this continent but you can breed and sell those. The laws here are messed up. I don't understand how we can sell, breed, or have species that aren't from this continent. At least Grey's are from this continent.

Jessica..If you read above... you willl find out i just talked to a girl that wasnt aware of the law. I looked up the regulation thanks to brian posting me a link and we are good to go. Both can be shipped that you were willing to send. I just wanted to make sure im not breaking any laws. I AM VERY PRECAUTIOUS =P

Understood- they've just started calling here a couple of days ago and they serenade me through the night. It's very relaxing from a distance and through a closed window.

Good luck with adding some more species to your breeding efforts by the way.

Oh I see now. I have Grey's and Spring Peepers calling. The Grey's are making their way to my pool. The Spring Peppers are always hiding in my woods. Saw my first grey Tree Frog today. I was sitting on my pool deck.

Hi Jessica! It does not matter where animal is from. Animal import/breeding laws have more to do with the species capability to survive, reproduce, and damage the local endemic populations and ecosystems.
