I decided to do a simplish fbt set-up to save on money right now. It's a standard 29 gal tank. since they don't like deep water I had the divider made 6 inches tall. I would of liked to do a more natural set up like the tanks all you guys have, but that will be for another day.
Anyway, do fbts like 50/50 land and water or?? (I have a repo filter for the water part and might make a water fall) Since the land part will have plants I don't want to get root rot, so could I do a false bottom type thing? Only with gravel instead of egg crate, to keep costs low?? Does the water evaporate out of the gravel or is there someway to siphon it out or? Also what kind of live moss should I use? One more, what type of substrate for the plants? Could I just use peat from the big bales? I use it in my tarantula enclosure if I'm out of coco fiber. If I do a back ground, like cocofiber will it be removable if I want to use the tank for fish again someday? Thanks a ton!
Hi there
FBTs like 50/50 water and land Making a false bottom using gravel as you suggested is much easier.
The best thing to do if you want 50/50 water land ratio is slope gravel to one end of the tank and cover
it with substrate and window screen underneath so it dosent get all dirty with water quality,Plants will
grow fine in the gravel or dirt unless the water level is below the plant's base roots, (Bamboo grows
fine in water) Ive never done a 3d backround with my fbts but i would think it may work
Have a great day![]()
