Hi guys,
Long time no post lol! Anyway Im still slowly progressing with my set up and just had a question.
I have a compact canopy that will take two heat bulbs 50w in each socket. What type of bulbs would you guys recommend I use to get my temps right? The tank is 18"x18"x12" which is going to be split.
Cheers guys
First thing is to decide if you want light for observing frogs or just heating. For observing will need glo or blue type bulbs. Be aware albinos eyes and skin can't handle bright light. Other options are red bulbs (can use 24 hour since frog can't see) or black moonlight (can use 24 hour and gives very little light).
Second is to check if canopy has two independent switches (one per bulb) or just one. That will determine if you can use one for day and one for night; or if both will be used together. If independent will probably need 50W; if using both half that and start from there.
Second is to decor tank, add substrate and bring up humidity. Then would check out temps at day/night. Depending on temp would go to store and get a pair of bulbs to bring temps to desired levels. So at end it's going to be a trial error thing. Would try to explain that to store so they agree to exchange bulbs until you get it right.
All above will work if you keep room stable. If not; go for max wattage bulbs and get a controller. Rheostats are manual, thermostats are automatic; and remember not to exceed their maximum wattage. Good luck!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
Yes, they are on independent switches. So if I use a 50w day and night bulb along with the heatmat I should easily get my temps right. They are going to be on a thermo/hygrostat too so they cant get to hot.
I use a 50w infrared heat lamp for albino because there skin is sensitive. I keep the temp around 80-82 during day and 78 at night.
I currently use 50watt infared bulbs and just ambient light for daylight/viewing. Day temps range from 82-85 and night temps range from 76-80. Only reason I use bulbs instread of heating pads is because I had a bad experience with a pad shorting out and burning one of my reptiles.
Thanks for the advice guys, appreciate it!![]()
