    Default Removing uneaten crickets

    Hello everyone

I brought home my first White's on Friday (I'll be getting a second this week). He's nearly an inch long and seems to be settling in and eating well. I've been feeding him crickets in the evening but have noticed in the mornings that there might be one or two left. I know that you're supposed to remove the crickets so I've tried to but they're so fast that I can't catch them all, not that there are that many. They scurry off and hide before I can nab them.

I've put a couple of pieces of Broccolli in the vivarium with them but I was wondering how important it is to make sure you remove all of them. I've read that they can nibble on sleeping frogs so I don't want my frog to get hurt.

So how good is everyone else at getting all the leftovers out?! Is it something you just have to do your best at but if you can't get them all it doesn't matter that much? Or is it absolutely vital that you spend time and effort to get every last one out?!

    Cheers!

    Welcome Along!

I keep loads of different species and to be honest - I have never practiced removal and have never had any problems.

Leaving a piece of fruit/veg in is something I practice and I avoid feeding black crickets as they can get quite large and aggressive!

In the past I've had problems with the crickets burying in the substrate then rotting, creating a terrible stink. What I do now is move my tree frog into a seperate container to feed and then return him after he's finished. It's much cleaner this way and I have an actual count of how many crickets he's eating. Other people use tongs though I haven't tried this myself. Good luck.

Providing food for the crickets will most likely prevent bites to your frog.

Thank you both for the reassurance. I continue to put carrot/broccoli in their for them.

    Cheers

Hmmm, oh dear, hopefully tht won't happen to me! If it does maybe I will try removing the frogs. Although I would rather feed them in the vivarium as this must be a more natural setting for them to hunt in.

I've never had the rotting cricket issue - (although if kept humid in the plastic container they come in they do tend to go a bit rancid) I think it's because all my vivs are naturalistic and consequently their are soil mites etc running around helping to decompose any ead feeder animals / faeces!
