    Default Sick Green Frog

    Hi,
I am new here so please forgive me if I am posting in the wrong place. I have a pond in which I have 2 green frogs(1 male and 1 female) that I got as tadpoles and they are now 3 years old. They mated last year but none of the tadpoles survived the summer. This year in the spring the female showed up first as it got a little warmer and she looked fine. It then got very cold out for a few days before it warmed up again. About a week after it warmed up again, she showed up with half of her face blackened. Today,(4 days later)she showed up again and the part that was blackened now looks raw including her ear. I have uploaded 2 pictures of her in my gallery. I am just wondering if anyone can tell me what is wrong with her. Is it possible that this is frost bite from the short period after she emerged when it got very cold? Also, I am wondering if frogs feel pain as this looks very painful. So far she has survived for about two weeks with this condition. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Absolutely ! Frostbite.
    Poor baby

The black may still slough off ( peel)
She actually has started to heal !
The white edges around the very reddened area is new ( healing ) tissue.
It will look and act like a burn during the healing process.

You could try to catch her ?
If she were to be treated by a vet it would be with a topical medication called SSD (Silversulfadiazene )

Hopefully with her own immune defenses she can fight this off!

I would think it is painful .
It's hard to tell-but let's hope it involves the superficial skin only.

Reading about human frostbite will help you understand the physiology/ healing process better.
Frostbite is caused by severely reduced blood flow to the skin's surface (the blood vessels constrict to preserve core temperature).

I guess when you got the re-freeze she was was unable to adapt quickly enough?

Best of luck with her, Lynn

Thanks Lynn for your suggestions to help my frost bitten frog. I was unable to catch her so that I could treat her but after four weeks, it appears that she is healing nicely although I think she may be blind in her one eye.

    Thanks again

Poor little girl. She does however look much better in the last picture. Hope she continues to heal and thrive.
