I first noticed the lump 2 days ago. The underside of his body is still slightly transparent as he's so young, and 2 days ago I could see that the lump was directly where his heart is (or maybe his lungs. I'm not 100% sure which organ it was that I could see). Anyway, today I managed to get a closer look, and the lump is about twice as big as it was 2 days ago. It kind of looks as though it is 2 lumps merged into one now. He's got a healthy appetite and he's not showing any other signs of illness. He's behaving exactly the same as all of the other frogs. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? It doesn't look good :(
Sorry about the dirt in the background. I took these this morning right before I changed their water.
Looks like a tumor, if it's benign he could live with it though it does appear quite large. If it's malignant then there's probably not much that can be done unfortunately. Could also just be a genetic defect.
That is just a guess though, so take it with a grain of salt.
Hi,
could also be granulomas caused by Mycobacteria. I once had a frog with a similar looking lump which I sent in for a necropsy where acid-fast rods were found. But it´s impossible to say without an examination by an expert vet. I would leave the frog alone as long as it behaves normally, but it would be a good idea to quarantine it or at least not to cross-contaminate other tanks (by using own sets of equipment and disinfecting your hands after touching the water etc.).
Thanks for the replies. I thought it might be a tumour as well. It's hard to get a close look at it because he's a lively little thing!
I just saw him standing up against the edge of the tank with the daylight shining on him so I managed to get a closer look. It's still growing, and it definitely looks like 2 lumps merged into one now. I can see his heart beating through the lump that's highest up on his chest. It looks as though his heart is in the centre of he lump, protruding from his body. The second lump (attached to the 1st) looks like another organ protruding from his body, but I might be wrong.
He still doesn't seem to be suffering at all, but the thing is getting bigger so he might start suffering soon![]()
