    Unhappy I'm worried about my R E T F

Hi! I got my Red-Eyed Leaf Frog about two weeks ago and he hasn't been acting very well.

He hasn't been eating at all, and lately he hasn't even been moving.

I bought about three different kinds of fake plants, blue rocks for the bottom of the tank, and a small branch.
I know that I made the mistake of buying my frog from a pet store and not a breeder.

I think he ate the first few days that I had him. But now all the crickets are found dead or are still there.

He's turned a kinda.. darker green.

    I'm worried about him.

Can someone help me figure out the problem? That would be great, thanks!
    I'll provide any information needed.

    Here's some photos ~

Here he is, the first day that I got him.

    Here is his set-up

    And here he is today

He will just sit on the glass some times and not move for maybe two days.. Even at night, he won't always move and he will look super dry.

Again, I think I can provide any information, and I'm willing to do anything and spend plenty of money to make him comfortable and make him healthier!

    Thanks

    Hi augus,
Sorry you are having a bit of trouble.
    He actually looks good !
I would suggest covering three sides of the enclosure ( brown parer bag or the like - temporarily )
This will help him feel more secure.

So how is this little guy able to grab his crickets?
Crickets can't swim ( and cannot climb glass)
You have deep water in there -----for a red eye.
A red eyed tree frog would prefer a dampened substrate and a soaking dish with water that is not above it's chin.
You could use dampened paper towel temporarily - de-chlorinated water of course...and a shallow soaking dish with the same.

    and/or

Consider feeding him in a bowl. ie clear glass - 3" sides- (like a pyrex type bowl)
Set it close to the back of the tank ( on the blue substrate /gravel) ---------near where he can climb down and sit on the edge of the bowl.

Is that what I should do? Put one of those bowls in my tank and just stick the crickets in there? Will the crickets jump out or anything? He hasn't been moving, so I'm scared he won't even try and get to them.

Do you think it would be okay to get him a buddy to put in there with him?

the crickets won't be able to climb out of the bowl. they cannot climb glass. Lynn's suggestion of covering the sides of the glass is spot on. it will make your little phib friend fee more safe and secure and he/she will acclimate easier.

as far as a buddy for him, i would suggest getting the hang of it with the one you have for a few months and then go from there. the most important thing you can do is heed any and all of the advice Lynn has to offer. the lady knows her red eyes. plain and simple. in my opinion, going against her advice would be foolish and detrimental to your frog.

Sounds great! I definitely respect the opinion of the mod with 2k posts ~

When he was asleep, he was a light green colour, and when he woke up to eat, he turned a darkish green colour. But he has some spots of the light green on him now.
    What's going on?

    This is normal, right?

And I put a small bowl in there. The only one that would fit.
The crickets haven't crawled out yet, and I'm sure they would if they could. Does this work?

And I covered the tank just now!

I don't have any paper bags or anything like it, so I'm using face towels until I can get some. Should I buy some of those fancy wallpapers to put on the inside of them?

    Thanks, guys~ You're a great help so far :3

    Hi Angus

When he was asleep, he was a light green colour, and when he woke up to eat, he turned a darkish green colour. But he has some spots of the light green on him now.
What's going on? THIS IS VERY NORMAL

And I put a small bowl in there. The only one that would fit.

FEED HIM WELL- HE WILL NOT OVER EAT -YOU CHOSE THE PROPER SIZE CRICKET
YES, THIS WORKS REALLY WELL--- DON'T FEED THE CRICKETS IN HIS BOWL.
REMOVE THE UNEATEN CRICKETS THE NEXT MORNING AFTER THE LIGHTS COME BACK ON- PUT THE CRICKETS BACK IN THE CRICKET KEEPER ( FEED THE CRICKETS THERE)
YOU SHOULD DUST THEM WITH : 1) CALCIUM AND VIT D3 SUPPLEMENT 2) VITAMIN SUPPLEMENT
DO A FROG FORUM SEARCH FOR LOADS OF INFO ON THIS TOPIC - ONE VERY GOOD THREAD VERY RECENTLY

I don't have any paper bags or anything like it, so I'm using face towels until I can get some. Should I buy some of those fancy wallpapers to put on the inside of them?

PERFECT- THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY - SO NO NEED TO GO THROUGH A LOT OF TROUBLE.
AS TIME GOES ON AND THE FROG DEVELOPS A SCHEDULE OF GETTING UP WHEN TH LIGHTS GO OUT , YOU CAN REMOVE THE COVER ONE SIDE AT A TIME. PROVIDE A DAY/NIGHT CYCLE OF LIGHTS ( IE USE A TIMER). AFTER A WHILE HE WILL GET UP WITH IN MINUTES AFTER LIGHTS OUT!

Im going with lynn on this... your terrarium..needs substrate like tree fern or coconut fiber... water bottoms is really only good when breeding them...use a water bowl instead.... i also agree with bill...stick with one for now...you can definatly get him a buddy but give it a couple of weeks..learn how this frog reacts...the color pattern on him worries me alot. My frogs never turn splotchy like that and i have 14 of them. if lynn says its ok it probably is...but it really does concern me. feel free to view my website on care of your red eye: RED EYE TREE FROG - RED EYE BASICS also we are always here to help you =)

    Default I'm worried about my R E T F

    Hi! I thought I'd join in .

Your frog is adjusting to his new home and is a bit stressed. Be sure his house temp is around 78'F during the day and 76'F at night with his humidity between 70-80%.

Turn a light on during the day and off at night. A 12/12 hour day/night schedule is perfect. It will help him to adjust.

Try and minimize the noise around the tank. Keep it nice and calm/quiet.

Routine works well with them to help settle in.

No worries, he will find the food if in the bowl. He just needs to relax enough to head down for them. He will if you have everything regulated for him.

The light green spots show up when they are stressed. By adjusting all that Lynn, Bill, CJ, and I have mentioned he should start to relax and the spots should go away. Do not handle him. If the spots persist more than a day or so you may want to start treating. Just keep an eye on him the next 2 or so days. Keep us posted.
