Hello everyone.
I am new to this and lots to learn so bear with me. I do not see to many American Green Tree Frog (AGTF) in the forums. I created this thread to show my journey and hopefully learn new things and teach other new people from my mistakes as time goes on.
First. I bought this off of someone on CL. I got the 12*12*18 exo terra tank, two fake plants, bark for substrate, water dish, and two sticks from the guys yard. and some crickets. The frog looked healthy and I wanted to learn. So there you go. A few bucks later and I have the kit. Get home and feed the little guy and the kids loved it. We hand fed him three crickets. He was starving.
Here this photo shows as bought.
Quick reading I learn that the substate is wrong and the humidity is much much to low. If anything the tree back on the ground is making it even more dry. Off to the store the next day to get more crickets, cricket food/water, and a mister.
First three days little froggy did nothing but sit on the big branch and move around a bit but always came back. Sometimes sitting in the water bowl. Which I clean out every day. Misting two times a day with Spring water to make him more happy. One time I heard him croaking a few times. COOL I thought.
Wanted to make some adjustments. Bought some moss and filled the bottom and got rid of the back substrate. Much better moisture and humidity.
Now with modifications. Frog is happier. Temp 70-73 Humidity 85-91%
The lower substrate is really wet and I am not sure yet if that is good or bad. Will see about adding a water feature or mister in the future. right now it humid as is. For now I feed the froggy 3 crickets a day, but I will experiment and put 6-10 in there and see if he he try to eat all at once or can let them sit around until he hungry. That would be great for when I need to go on vacations or travel.
looks good. I would remove the substrate and add a drainage layer in there. otherwise, the substrate will eventually become a bog and a bog is a wonderful place to grow some nasty bacteria. live plants will also help keep humidity levels stable as well as adding beneficial oxygen into the viv.otherwise, the tank is looking good.![]()

Following advice and reading. Added substrate of hydroballs and then plastic netting with a 1 inch layer of coco fiber stuff. Added the 6foot large vine and a small (seems too big and not sure how to cut it).
Frog croaks a few times a day. Cannot put lots of crickets in there. I put 3 large and he ate them all. That seems like he was eating too much.
Don't worry, green tree frogs have big appetite![]()
It is about a month or so into this adventure. I feed him med-large crickets. He eats them up fine. Clean the poop every few days if I can find it. Sometimes he is vocal other times just silent.
Crickets are escaping the enclosure before he can finish eating. I watched one. And from putting in the floor to escaping was under 1 minute. Not sure how to seal the top lip where the background and top are.more reading.
Can you post a picture of where the crickets are escaping from?
Silicone is my usual choice for sealing small cracks, you'd need to remove the frog while it cures though. A low-temp hot glue gun might also do the trick depending on your gap.
if it's not an obvious spot, filter floss works wonders![]()

I was hand feeding at first but I fixed the issue. I rather have him hunt for his food. Taking the advice of the posters above I used suran wrap as a temp solution and it working great. After I finish moving to the new house and settle down will research on using silicone or another filler. Yes I still need to take a photo of where the crickets are escaping. Now that this is resolved I can put 6-10 crickets in the tank with some carrots and lettuce to eat and they are fine. The frog eats about 2 a day and I think he is happy. AT night he is so loud with his croaking. Before he was very quiet.
AFTER the move: REAL plants.
Thanks Carlos. Yes I am trying different things. I think the humidity levels so high and the crickets he can eat any time are making him happy. He now is seen in several different places in the tank through out the day instead of just one place. Early mornings he is so loud with his croaking. Thinking of putting another Green Tree frog in there so he has company. NO RETF in this area so I will have to wait on that.
Wanted to say that I am selling my Tree Frog and home. He will be going to a good home. I have moved over to PDF and now have 4 of them with several homes.![]()
Thanks everyone, while I will not be in the tree frog forums you can catch me in the darts forum.
