    Calathea Ornata

My favorite plant! Lots of varieties

    (above photo found @ : http://plantersenvy.com/plants-wpictures.html )

It blooms too! Smells really nice. The leaves are beautiful when they unfurl.
Below- blooming in my A callidryas enclosure. If you look closely there are three other buds.
It has a very strong, very pleasant fragrance that you smell immediately when the doors are opened.

    Default great plant !!

I love the calatheas! So pretty and the patterns give a nice addition to any vivarium .

I love the ornata! It is a very dark green with a light pink pattern.
    ...my image

    This is my second favorite...

Great post, Lynn . And thanks, Bill, for the link. I may have to do a little online shopping .

no prob ladies that link is from my "private stash" of plant links. I'll post another tonight of a company that specializes in miniature plants and shrubs. it's geared towards the model railroader, but the stuff they sell can work in certain vivs.

How well does this hold up under the weight of the frogs? I have a couple of the related Maranta's that provide nice foliage but aren't at all free standing like your Calathea here. A fragrant and noticeable bloom is an added plus. The 'Fishbone' Maranta that Heather posted a picture of will also bloom frequently, but they are pretty tiny things that have no appreciable smell that I've noticed.

for the ultimate in olfactory emanations, search no further than the ever popular jasmine. it doesn't have the leaf structure for frogs, but it has pretty flowers and you cannot beat the aroma!!

    Brian,
The leaf is very sturdy. It likes having 'wet feet' too. The branch that hold the leaf is sturdy as well. The white on the leaves is bright. This one pictured is in a tree frog enclosure. I do not see the red eyeds on it, however. They have choices they prefer more than this plant. I have it in there because I like it.
The varieties that Black Jungle sells are very nice as they will not get as large as others.

This first link is the one ( I have ) that is blooming
    Calathea vitatta

Hi Bill ( how are you ),
Why don't you take a drive up to the White Plains show April 27th? We can shop at Black Jungle ! I want get more of the lance-leaf creeping fig they sell. It's a great little cover plant. It doesn't go crazy like the oak leaf creeping fig. It grows in a dense mound.

    Ficus sp. 'Lance Leaf'

Some of my favorites ! Their plants are very healthy ! I think, noticeably more healthy than other suppliers. I have these growing on my moss vines:
Syngonium rayii - RARE - Limited Offer!
    http://www.blackjungleterrariumsuppl...hos_p_618.html
    http://www.blackjungleterrariumsuppl...ue_p_1953.html

You're right , I never thought about jasmine. Would it do well in constantly wet soil?
I think every Jasmine plant I've had.....ended up w/ spider mites

    Have a great day !

I would love to Lynn, but since the wife, my daughter and I are moving in with my mom tempkrarily until we find a new house, I have no room for the plants I currently have that syngonium is one of my favs. I was going to put one in the 125. let me know how it grows for you, so I can decide whether to add it when I am able to finish the tank.

I forgot. the jasmine. that stuff is literally a weed. I would try it in a dry spot in a viv first. there's always a dry spot...lol but I actually think it would do fine in a moist substrate if you allow it to acclimate slowly.

thanks ed and I give my wife a lot of credit. I rarely have to ask for forgiveness.as long as the bills are paid, she doesn't give me much grief. OK, so when I started collecting animal skulls a few months back, she got a little weirded out. but no problems..lol

Syngonium rayii is a great vivarium plant, after awhile it will send out some vines which you can train up a background, the last time I pruned my around tank it had about 4' in vines with little plantlets popping up every few inches. The Ficus panama does ok as well, but it definitely goes in the category of one of the slow to establish plants.
