So, I've noticed very recently, within the last week or so that my little frog's tank has been having the HARDEST time keeping it's humidity up. Is my tank too hot? My apartment has been around 80 degrees lately and her tank is roughly 90 degrees. I'll check her tank about every hour when I'm home and every hour it's down to 20-30% humidty. I started pouring water into the bottom and going through about two full spray bottles worth of water only to get it up to 70%. I feel bad for her and I want to know what I'm doing wrong. I do have an undertank heater since my apartment was getting to about 65 degrees during the night. I have about 1" of coconut fiber at the bottom of her tank. My bearded dragon's cage has more humidity in it most of the time with no water source than her's and her ground is almost always half-way wet.
What am I doing wrong?
Good Morning,
We need some additional information:
Most importantly - What kind of frog do you have?
If you frog is a whites or a red eyed tree frog:
until we can figure out how to help you more-put the very largest (even a dinner plate if it fits)
and very shallow saucer of de-chlorinated water into the tree frog's tanks.
and/or
If the tank is very small- remove all soil and replace it with VERY, VERY wet /thick layers of paper towel. ( wet with de-chlorinated water)
then, please answer ( cut and past here ) the questions in "trouble in the enclosure " see post #17

We'll fix itTalk to you soon!

If you're putting in that much water you might want to get a new digital hygrometer.

I actually have a similar problem, and have been having trouble keeping humidity up. Ive got a 26w 2.0 reptiglo bulb in a 12x12x18 and have seen humity go down while temperatures gone up (for winter). I got a new digital thermo/hygrometer combo to check (in case my analog had gone to trash) but it still seems to confirm I'm having trouble with humidity. Anyone have any solution? Would getting a 13w version of my bulb decrease the humidity less perhaps? I also have a slight question about tank layout and backdrops if anyone has knowledge on H. cinerea tank preference, but I don't really want to hijack this topic.
1-size of enclosure -- it's a 12x12x18
2-# on inhabitants - specifically ( if there is another frog ---size differences ?)-- just 1
3-humidity--used to stay around 70-80%
4-temp--anywhere between 80-90
5-water - type - for both misting and soaking dish--Drinking water
6-materials used for substrate--Coconut fiber with a bit of moss
7-enclosure set up i.e. plants( live or artificial) wood, bark etc -how were things prepared prior to being put into the viv--artificial plants and vines, ceramic water bowl, everything rinsed with drinking water before going in
8-main food source--Crickets, occasionally a mealworm or wax worm
9-vitamins and calcium ? ( how often )--Calcium down to about 1-2 x a week. She refuses to eat dusted crickets and spits them out if she can
10-lighting--40W basking and a daylight bulb
11-what is, specifically, being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure--Small heating pad in the bottom corner under tank, top basking light
12-when is the last time he ate--3 crickets last night
13-have you found poop lately--Poo's on her favorite leaf
14-a pic would be great ( including the frog ) any little cell phone pic is fine
15- how old is the frog--I've had her since January 31, she's about 1- 1 1/2" ong
16-how long have you owned him--Month and a half
17- is the frog wild caught or captive bred--Captive
18- frog food- how often and if its diverse what other feeders are used as treats--Mealworms not as much as I used to, and occasionally wax worms
19- about how often the frog is handled--hardly ever. She really really doesn't like it.
20-is the enclosure is kept in a high or low traffic area--med-low area, she does share the room with a bearded dragon but 3 out of 4 walls are covered and the only wall uncovered is towards a window that is always closed.
Oh-And Also, since I live in Phoenix, AZ, the temps outside and inside are about 80 degrees should I turn off her undertank heater? I only used it for the winter because we don't use our furnace and our apt got to about 55-65 degrees at night.
From your avitar picture it looks like she is a green tree frog or a whites? If so, you want to lower the temp, 90 is way to high. Around 78 during the day is good and you can let it drop to 70 at night. Humidity is a headache, I have been battling with it for months. My solution has been to make sure my whole house is humidified and keep the coco fiber wet. You can also wet a washcloth and lay it over the top of the tank and cover it with saran wrap.
A hygrotherm would help too. You can connect a fogger to it and the under the tank heater. You program in what you want the heat and humidity to be and it turns things off and on as needed.

The sad thing is... I already have the top Saran wrap and the humidity still doesn't stay up. I do have an analog hydrometer. I was going to order an analog one off amazon for $20 shipped. I saw some condensation in it a week or so ago and I wonder if it quit working? Ever since I've had issues with it. I just cleaned her tank and used paper towels and SOAKED them a long with lots of soaking wet moss and the humidity went down... something is wrong with it I think...
