Doing a study and as part of this I would like fellow frog/toad owners to simply answer this question for me: 'Which substrate(s) do you use for your anuran(s) and why?' If you use different substrates for different species rather than the same throughout your collection then it would be handy if you specify which species uses what substrate (and perhaps brands of substrate e.g. exo terra to get a better idea). If you answer this on this thread or by pm either way you'd be doing me a huge favour. Thanks in advance.
I have White's Dumpy Tree Frogs and they are on coco fibre.
I use Coconut fiber (Eco Earth brand) for my pacman frogs and red eyed tree frogs, also for my golden day gecko.
I use the coco fiber because it holds moisture well helping to keep up the tank humidity, because it has less of impaction risk if accidentally swallowed during feedings than husk or moss, and because my pacman frogs can burrow easily in it. I change mine every 4 weeks.
I use paper towels as substrate while my frogs are new and in quarantine so I can monitor their intake and output. I change them daily.

ABG with long fiber sphagnum moss on top for my Santa Isabels. It's what the viv came with. ( I bought mine pre made by a local designer at a reptile expo). I would and plan on using it again in my own build. All the plants in my viv are doing great and I attribute that in great part to a good soil mixture.
Abg topped with sphagnum and leaflitter. Good drainage for healthy plants

For my darts:
I ended up with:
bottom up:
hydro ( I used the round one ) ( I had a hard time deciding between the round hydro and gravel )
fiberglass screen
3/4 " thick polyester batting ( fabric store- available in big rolls)
3"-4 ABG
leaf litter
3 different mosses ( there is a tread around about these) mound and 2 different tropical sheet mosses (one from Black Jungle one from NE Herp)
My 3 dart tanks ( modified exo-terra - glass tops) are drilled - for drainage- the drain hole it just below the top of the hydro layer
It drains out ( siphons out) automatically through 5/8 tubing into a bucket

Thanks a lot guys![]()
I use hydroponics soils covered in cocofiber. Excellent drainage and plenty of food for the plants.

I'm curious Bill. What's the cost of the hydroponics soil vs ABG or other similar mixes. The closest supplier of ABG I have is easily an hour away which is worth the ride if I'm buying tons but I can't afford to and shipping costs double the cost of the ABG.
I pay about $9 for a large bag. 20L i believe, but i can double check when i get home. It does have perlite in it, but i cover it with 2" of cocofiber, so the frogs can never get to the perlite.
