Default First toad, girl or boy?

    Hey all,

Can anyone tell me if this is a boy or girl? I recently got two fire bellys from different places and they just got put together in the same tank a couple days ago. For the most part theyre separated all day but I hear a lot of calling at night. There's also a lot of mounting/amplexing and it's usually the same one on top (I think). This is the bottom one and i'm really hoping it's a girl since i'd be more comfortable knowing that they weren't just fighting all day. I do not know for sure if this one has been calling since the calling and mounting are done in areas where I can't see them. Also there is a pic of their tank, just in case it matters.

I've looked a lot online and read about head shape and forearm girth but I was hoping one of you experts could help me out.

Thanks so much for any help, I really appreciate it.

Exclamation Re: First toad, girl or boy?

    Hi there
Usually its pretty hard to get the gender of fire bellied toads, if its been calling, its male, only males will call and usually if a male is
amplexing another male, its usually through confusion and the male below will make a release call to say "Get off me!" By the looks
of it, you have a male
    good luck with your frogs

I'm gonna guess male also. It can be very hard to tell with these guys. I thought I had a female for quite a while then one day found it amplexing the one I already knew was a male

Thanks a lot. Right after I posted that I saw that one in the pic mount the other one.

So if I may, I have one other question:

They are fighting/trying to mate/whatever a lot. At least 5 times a day easily, usually at night and it's really loud. I'm worried about it and want to know if I should separate them or put them in a bigger tank and see what happens. Right now they're in a 10 gallon. I have a 50 gallon I was going to take my time setting up, but I would rather just put them in there if we're talking about a space issue. Would getting a female help? Or is this just totally normal behavior.

I've read that their mating times are in the spring, but then I've also seen people say it's from may-september (ish). If my toads are just trying to mate and this will pass then i'm cool with it. But the calling sounds aggressive and I get really worried when one is forcing the other's head under water (which happens sometimes).

    Thanks.

As long as both are eating there's not much to be worried about its normal behavior.

Make a lot of hiding spaces using fake or live plants, cork bark, log hides, small plant pots, and stuff like that. My smaller male likes nice tight places to hide away from the larger more dominant one
