AJC's Frogroom (UK) January 6th, 2010 04:34 AM: Call for help - heating vivaria?
> I was just wondering - what do you use to heat your dart frog vivariums?

I don't heat my dartfrog vivaria individually. I'm quite happy for the room temperature to drop to 14-15°C overnight occasionally in winter - the temperature in the vivs remains a couple of degrees higher due to the heat reservoir in the substrate and furnishings. During the day, lighting boost the temperatures back into the 20s. If I'm worried about temperatures dropping lower than that, I add supplementary heating to the room they are in, making sure it doesn't get too low.
This type of seasonal change - cooler and drier for a few months in winter - (and indeed daily change) is good for the frogs. Frogs don't suffer at these temperatures, in fact, it mimics their natural environment and gives them a break from breeding. if you do feel the need to add extra heat to individual vivaria, use the minimum heat required to hold a minimum temperature and making it relatively constant - temperatures bouncing around is far more stressful than gradual changes.
