Hi there, i am new to frog owning and i have just bought myself a pac man frog after doing some research and these seemed most appropriate for me. I have some problems/questions that i though i could ask some more experienced frog owners.
My first problem is that i cant can my terrarium above 23c (73f). How could i increase this? A i have a heat mat on the side of the tank (one half below the substrate one half below) the substrate is about 6-8 cm deep (2-4 inch) of coconut husk fibre ( the brick you soak in water for 30 mins or so)
Some other questions are:
Should the substrate be compressed or lose?
How wet should it be because it is damp now but no puddles in it at all ( except the water dish)
How old is my frog ( will display in pictures) its around the size of a ten pence piece or an american quarter.
He does not seem to be very aggressive or ever want to eat. I know they like to sit there and just bury themselves in the substrate and wait for food to walk by but he take no interest at all.
How much should i feed him/her because i have heard various things. The food i have at the moment are wax worms and crickets.
Is my tank too tall? it was the last one they had at the shop so i had no choice in the matter as i it was hard to find this frog in my area.
Also i have some standard moss which i first put in then removed as i heard they could eat it buy accident and it can harm them is this true?
Also does my set up look good for his size? is there any improvements i could make?
Thanks Alex
PS how do you upload photos? and his name is jabba the hut
ok first things first, let's do a tank first
would you please describe your tank ( measurements) and post a pic. to post a pic you go advanced and then look for attachments.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!
hi Alex, i had the same problem with keeping the heat and humidity in, i solved this by covering half of the top mesh with a towel ... which i have now changed to some of the spare coco background i had but that has let the temp increase to the right leveli hope this helps

Here are some pics and the measurements of the tank are 12 in high x 8in deep and 7in wide (30x20x18) aprox. As you see i keep a damp tea towel over the top to keep humidity in. is there any others ways and the terrarium is a plastic one.
thanks Alex
P.S if you cant see those coins are a U.K 10P and a US 1/4

You can use plastic wrap of plexiglass to cover 3/4 of the screen top and it will help hold heat and humidity in.
Also should i just leave crickets in there for him to eat, because if i wave them in front of his face he is just not interested ?
I must say this - he is absolutely adorable.
ok, back to businesslet's continue going over your questions.
Tank is great, a bit confused about what kind of substrate you're using, in that awesome 4th pic it looks like coco husk, but in the rest of pics it seems that it is not. you need to use coco fiber ( eco earth, plantation soil), expand it with treated tap water, get rid of all bigger pieces in it if there are any. it has to be moist, but not soaking wet. did it answer your question about substrate?
temps - i don't see where your UTH is positioned, it has to be on a side. if one small that you have is not enough, get another one and stick it to the other side and increase ambient room temp, that would help a lot. you gotta increase temps fast, 73F for a baby is very very cold. you need 80-82 day, 75-78 night. most likely that is a reason he is not interested in food.

Thank you for the help, it is moss i had it filled up with it but heard it was bad so tried to remove it. There is very little left in it. i Think the heat mat is 7w so may move up to a 9-12w or another 7w heater so i could turn one off at night. Also do you think he/she is an ornate or cronwelli ( or how ever you spell it) thank you very much
Alex
I use two undertank heaters and it still wasnt enough. Then got a red night light still didnt get it right. I have to put a small space heater by the tank. And i made a fogger which was easy to keep humidity up
Well i am heading to the reptile shop today so i will get some advice from them too, i really appreciate the advice all together though. I also have a fish tank Quite a good one that i think may be suitable. It does have a powerful florescent light in the top its 30 x 30 x 30 so quite large for a small frog that is what i was thinking. Also do frogs like the bright light? because i have 12 hours on 12 hours off. But this light is like mega bright, it also gets rather warm. The tank it self looks like it would hold humidity and heat well. What do you guys think?
Thanks Alex
