    Smile Question on Mixing Species

Hey everyone! I just had a quick question relating to Randidae--

Would it be possibly to keep an American Bullfrog and a Northern Green Frog in the same tank? I currently own an adult female Green and was just wondering for the future, so no immediate plans to do so. Thanks!

    Eli

    Default Question on Mixing Species

The bullfrog may try and eat the treefrog, I wouldn't suggest mixing species at all. Not to mention there is a slight chance they could be toxic to each other...
    It's just an unnecessary risk.

Thanks for the quick reply! I didn't mean Green Treefrog, sorry to not be clear enough! I mean Northern Green Frog as in Rana Clamitans, a similar sized frog and sometimes found in the same ponds.

    Default Question on Mixing Species

Ahh, I see. If they are normally native and cannot eat each other. I suppose if you are able to provide an enclosure that meets both of their needs, it wouldn't be a problem.

I would still view it as risky however. If one has parasites or something else nasty, the other will get it too most likely... Just err on the side of caution when mixing species.

    Default Question on Mixing Species

    Hello Eli,

It is not recommended that species be mixed. They carry different protective secretions that can be harmful to each other in smaller spaces (ie not in the wild). American bullfrogs are aggressive eaters and will eat anything they can fit into their mouths. Mine can grab up two large adult dubia roaches at the same time without difficulty. They have been known to eat mice and birds in the wild, snakes, other frogs, fish, etc. My recommendation is that if you'd like to get both, have two separate tanks. It is even recommended that you house adult bullfrogs separately, unless both are females and of the same size. American bullfrogs get big and as an adult need a minimum of a 55 gallon tank. Just things to think about. My male is not even full grown and could easily move into a 100 gallon tank soon.

They are great frogs . Hope this helps.
