    Default Sick Frog!

Hi. new to this forum. I have a sick three year old pyxie. He is 7 inches and was doing great. Several days ago my frog jumped out of its normal burrow and into its water bowl. I noticed he looked very light colored and swollen. Noticing this wasn't his normal aestivation look I pulled him from the tank and disposed of his coco fiber substrate. I put him in a 10 gallon aquarium and have been replacing his water completely twice a day. Because I wasn't sure he was sick I have been monitoring him and changing his water often. Now he continues to be puffed up with air and he only partially opens his eyes (which look sickly). Can anyone help! Do people go to special frog vets?

Hi, Welcome to the forum, Sorry your frog is unwell. I don't know about Pyxie frogs but it sounds like you should get him to a Vet asap. He/she maybe constipated which would explain why he/shes sitting in the water. But this is just a guess. Would you be able to post a photo for the other members here who will definitely be able to help you.

I know he isn't suffering from impaction. He pooped normally right before he got sick. His skin is shedding and his eyes look awful.

Until John sounds off on this, I second Ebony's advice. Take him to a vet. Where in the US are you located? If you're in Massachusetts, I can recommend one to you.

Whatever it is, he's beyond anything you can do for him - you need a vet asap.

Update... I took him to the vet.... The veterinarian an expert on exotic pets said he appeared to be in good condition. He used a tongue depresser to open his mouth and then got his finger stuck in his mouth when the frog bit down. Unfortunately I could not afford all of the tests he wanted to run on him. He is being tested for Chytrid fungus and I was given an antibiotic regiment to be delivered via syringe injection twice daily.

Chytridiomycosis is usually treated with a bath in an itraconazole solution, not antibiotics. The vet may be treating for a bacterial infection.

The vet is treating for a bacterial infection... because it most likely is... The test for Chytrid is a precaution.

He looks so much better! I think he is going to be fine... I will no longer be feeding him crickets. The vet told me they are terrible... Carriers of disease and lack proper nutrition. I am switching to roaches. I will also be offering more rodents. He is 7" and weighs almost 1 pound.
