    Default Making wood safe!!!!

So I just went outside and found a maple stump. I have washed it all off. Than I scraped all the bark off, but under it was maggots! EW!! Is that okay? I still am going to put it in a bleach container for 48 hours. Will this be okay? Or wil the maggots survie the bleach. Thanks yall.

If the stump is not too big I would recommend boiling it in water. Using bleach you will have to keep soaking it in water baths afterwords till you cant smell the bleach anymore, then its not even 100% that all the bleach has leached out.
This info is not from personal experience, but from researching the web about the topic.

do not bleach it. for one, it will actually turn it's color a bit. if you can, scrub it down with water. then you can either boil, bake or bbq it. i personally prefer the bbq method for large pieces. just be careful not to burn it. i once used a buddy's drying booth at his bodyshop for a large piece once

I have a method for making wood safe, I am just wondering if the bleach will make this wood safe and kill this junk off.

I have a question about this too. We have several manzanita trees in the yard and just cut a dead piece off of one. My husband is currently sanding it smooth, then we plan to boil it for a while. How long should we boil it, and is this a good way to make it safe for the white's tree frogs? Thanks!

introducing bleach into a porous item like wood would be a very bad idea. you may never get it all out and it may leech out as the wood gets wet.

I was actually going to post about this. I just found a great branch while out "lure hunting" on a frozen pond. It was on a really old beaver dam so it was chewed on one end and looks twisted and worn. Way cool. It's too long to boil and I don't want to bleach it. Is baking sufficient or is there something else that should be done to cure it?

baking will work fine michelle. anything over 250 for 30 minutes or more.

If you bought the cork commercially, it "should" be safe. But baking would be a nice precaution. Boiling wouldn't be as effective since cork is.buoyant

If you plan on sealing them completely, i would just seal them, if leaving them natural, boil.

That will work, but it will dry hazy. 2 part epoxy will dry clear, but shiny. When i made my homemade mushrooms, i sealed them with clear, acrylic nail polish. You can also use krylon fusion clear coat. A little sand or dirt while the sealer is still wet will remove the shiny-ness
