It is generally recommend that the divider be covered with some sort of background. Or as you mentioned, us an opaque material. This eliminates the stress of being able to see the occupant on the other side. If it is properly sealed, then cross-contamination shouldn't be a problem. There is always some risk, of course, even when the frogs are housed completely separately.
