I really want to build my own viv. I've been reading a lot but what I still don't get is how you all are attaching the plants to the backgrounds. If they are made of silicone, then foam and then the mixes are then "painted" on, where would the plants go? are you making cut-outs in the foam to place substrate to plant the plants? do the plants just grow directly in the foam after planting them? Are there certain plants that I should use to attach there vs. the ones I would use on the horizontal part of the viv? Any and all comments are welcome
Juli
Hey Juli. Good question, a lot of people use different methods to attach plants to backgrounds. First off when building your background you can use 2 or 3 inch net hydroponic pots built directly into your background using great stuff foam. Be sure to have holes to allow for drainage. I like to use bent paper clips or fishing line to attach plants too. The paper clips can be removed once the plant develops a strong root base.
so then the roots just grow into the foam itself?
They'll grow onto it.
I use: a ridiculous assortment of mesh pots that i foam around, flourocarbon fishing line, stainless steel wire, plastic "zip" ties, aluminum welding wire and i make cut outs in the foam. It all depends on my design, the application and the plant.

What about attaching sheet moss on different sections? What would be the best method there, until it attaches itself?
A paper clip would work. I just normally lay my moss in strategic locations and let it grow. For growing on logs, you can tie it on with fishing line

Anyone have any pics from when you set your up?
you can look through the photo albums of my 29 gallon build and see how i did some planters there. Link is in my signature to a photo album and here is a link to the thread. the 29 gallon has gone through many changes. From a very time consuming styrofoam / grout background to a great stuff background with cocofiber. http://www.frogforum.net/vivarium-te...build-log.html
You must have an elaborate set-up. Why would you need fishing line, wire, steel, etc? Is this ok for the frogs and water? I'm trying to picture what you have. I do not put anything like that in mine. Instead I have plants nestled into gravel, have eco earth, smooth rocks, log, etc. I like my frogs to be in a natural setting where they are safe. Can you write about why you went to this extent? I can't picture it but if you explain I can try.
everything that goes into my enclosures is 100% frog safe, plant safe and fish safe. numerous techniques need to be employed for different circumstances. you can read step by step how i did everything and why here:

Sure, I'll check it out. My tank is easy with an underwater heater, half land and half water as I just re-organized my tank today which took 2 hours to complete. I just won't use glue or foam, my tank is real easy to maintain. Glad you wrote.
my tank requires almost 0 maintenance. other than 10 minutes to do a 50% water change every 2 weeks, i do not touch the tank. it is a self contained eco system. all of my tanks are.

Well, mine is pretty much the same except I check it every day, change water when its needed, always have food supply. I do the water change similar to you and once a month or sooner I clean entire tank, then I can re-build and re-arrange as needed.
