how do you grow and attach the plants to the background?

I really want to build my own viv. I've been reading a lot but what I still don't get is how you all are attaching the plants to the backgrounds. If they are made of silicone, then foam and then the mixes are then "painted" on, where would the plants go? are you making cut-outs in the foam to place substrate to plant the plants? do the plants just grow directly in the foam after planting them? Are there certain plants that I should use to attach there vs. the ones I would use on the horizontal part of the viv? Any and all comments are welcome

Hey Juli. Good question, a lot of people use different methods to attach plants to backgrounds. First off when building your background you can use 2 or 3 inch net hydroponic pots built directly into your background using great stuff foam. Be sure to have holes to allow for drainage. I like to use bent paper clips or fishing line to attach plants too. The paper clips can be removed once the plant develops a strong root base.

so then the roots just grow into the foam itself?

They'll grow onto it.

I use: a ridiculous assortment of mesh pots that i foam around, flourocarbon fishing line, stainless steel wire, plastic "zip" ties, aluminum welding wire and i make cut outs in the foam. It all depends on my design, the application and the plant.

What about attaching sheet moss on different sections? What would be the best method there, until it attaches itself?

You must have an elaborate set-up. Why would you need fishing line, wire, steel, etc? Is this ok for the frogs and water? I'm trying to picture what you have. I do not put anything like that in mine. Instead I have plants nestled into gravel, have eco earth, smooth rocks, log, etc. I like my frogs to be in a natural setting where they are safe. Can you write about why you went to this extent? I can't picture it but if you explain I can try.
