Thread: the roach motel (or maybe the roach coach)

  1. #1

Default the roach motel (or maybe the roach coach)

anyone who knows more than a little about me, knows i have what could be called an "unhealthy fascination" with Madagascar. so a fellow member sent me some of these little critters :

Thank you again Amanda, yer da bestest!!

that is their breeding bin. (there is a lot more eggcrate in there now, removed some for pics) but i wanted to keep some as pets as well, so i am taking my 15g, which was already cited to be a carnivorous plant tank, and turning it into a nice, little, roomy, quickie viv for 1 male and 4 females. i'm not going to heat it, so they will breed very slowly in here, and i can always move the nymphs to the breeding bin for feeders.

i already foamed and covered it. i just need to lay down my drainage layer, add substrate and plant. it should be done by sunday evening. (paws crossed)

you may have noticed that the background doesn't go all the way to the top. the unfiinished portion will be liberally coated with petroleum jelly, since these guys are climbers.

just thought you guys would like to see one of my "non frog" builds

oh, i forgot. it's great stuff (surprised..lol) and exoterra tree fern substrate. not the panels crushed up, the regular substrate. i'm really digging the stuff. i picked it up for $2 at a going out of business sale. i should have bought the huge bag for $10, but i wasn't sure how i would like it.

Currently up and running? 1 fish, 1 shrimp, 1 roach, 2 vivs. Lying in wait are a 55, 10, 125, 40b, and a 29 bowfront. And don't forget the 2 roach breeding bins and a fruit fly culture "station".

Wow I just came across this thread! That tank is awesome! That really makes me tempted to do something like that for my Dubias.... I have a weird attachment to them lol. I've had the same adults since they were nymphs (almost a year!). So the other night when I ran out of crickets and needed to feed a couple nymphs I actually was a little sad to do it! My boyfriend had to remind me that I had them to use as feeders LOL. Thankfully it's going to be a while before I have enough to feed off of regularly haha. But I do have a spare 5g that I could soup up for a select few... It's tempting!

Most frogs would be jealous of your roaches enclosure. Way to make us all look bad. Thanks Bill.

You know actually, my old boss was a crazy bad-a$$ about feeder insects (and other odd things), and we would catch native roaches on freezing cold days to be able to toss them into an enclosure inside. We kept hissers, native roaches, 2 large tubs of red wigglers (compost worms), thousands of meal worms, and fruit flies...then the odd things: walking sticks, leaches, micro aquatic organisms, and fiddle backs (far too many for comfort).
