Hi Cat! Welcome to the forum! We don't have too many people on here from Down East. (I'm from Damariscotta originally, so always good to see another Mainer around. )

This is a great place to find info. You should check out the Pixie section if you haven't already. Opinions on water dishes vary, as with most things. They tend to have a hard time getting out of glass dishes because there is nothing to grip off of. Plastic is the standard type used. Yes, there is a lot of debate about the use of moss. While it does help maintain humidity, it posses a great risk for impaction (severe constipation) if swallowed. This does lead to death in some cases. Pixies are voraciously eaters. They lunge very aggressively at their prey and often swallow some of whatever the prey in on. Dirt passes much easier through their digestive tract, but moss will clog up causing impaction. Again, welcome to the forum!

As long as there is a water source and moist Coconut Fiber the humidity doesn't have to be really high for a Pyxi, but if you need to hold in some extra moisture you can cover 3/4 of the screen top with Plexiglass with holes drilled in it or use plastic wrap to cover 3/4 of the lid. Just be sure that your lamp isn't sitting directly on the plastic wrap.

    Welcome to the forum .

I agree with Grif...moss is helpful for humidity and looks neat, but the risks aren't worth it. Stick with coconut fiber. If accidentally eaten, it can pass through easier. It is all I use for all of my frogs and I've never had a problem. I do as Grif noted and put the Saran or foil on top. It works well. Then I mist twice a day.
