    Default Exo-Terra Waterfall

I know that WTFs are notorious for dirtying their water, but I was offered something that I cannot refuse. I work at a pet store and the woman that has been heading the reptile department for 20 years just offered me an Exo-Terra Waterfall for my frog tank.

Has anyone used one of these with their WTFs? If so, how long has it lasted? Any tips on keeping it running for a looong time?

Just wondering which one it is? Any photos of it?

i've never used them, i prefer to make my own, but i know others who have used them and are pleased with them. as far as keeping them running a LONG time, i will tell you what i tell my customers about their cars, if it is man made, it IS going to break eventually. best advice i can offer, keep the water clean as possible to prevent a clog and burning the pump out.

It's not like I am paying anything for it, so if it dies on me it's not a big deal. I would like to keep it around for a little bit though. I think I am going to have to do some fiddling with it and maybe fashion some screen around the pump to keep the substrate from clogging it. Might make it last a little longer.

read some customer reviews on this product. (I went to amazon) I was considering on one of these last year, but after reading the feedback I was afraid to put one in with my frogs.
It would be nice to have outside the cage or in a viv for exotic plants.

i must admit, when my local pet shop was closing their doors, i almost bought one of those. but unfortunately, my ego got the best of me. i like ariel's idea. i might get one as a small planter. some moss, maybe a few stems growing out of it. Ariel, i think i love your brain!!LOL

I looked into them when I was doing research for my first vivarium setup and decided against it. Sorry I can't be of more help, but good luck!

After making sure that the pump for the waterfall worked, I talked to one of my coworkers about installing the rubbery screen material that I have left over from when I re-did my frog tank! We came up with an idea that will hopefully keep debris from clogging the pump up! I am taking this bad boy home tonight and hopefully it will be good to go here in a few days! I will let you all know how it turns out!

Lol!!!! The nylons and the screen mesh do work well. I had mesh around my intake tube when I raised tadpoles. I attached it with a black zip tie. Worked great. No babies stuck in the filter. I use it in my waterfall so my baby guppies don't get pulled in. It keeps larger debris out that the filter pads do not catch too.

Lol!!!! I was going to tease Bill about the nylons, but I can't think of a good line this morning, ha ha! I'll work on a good one :P .

How do you make your own waterfall? And how much water does it take at the bottom to keep it running?

You can make the waterfall slope out of great stuff foam covered in silicone, styrofoam covered in layered grout, down through wood pieces...etc. most people have it drain into a small pond or right down through a false bottom. It depends on what pump you use to pull the water up to the top of your waterfall. The depth is determined by the pump requirements. Chose your pump to meet the pressure it needs to reach the height of your waterfall. A taller waterfall needs a pump that can push the water up higher. A short waterfall does not need as strong of a pump pressure. Bill can help you more when choosing pumps. I know how to make the waterfalls, but I am still learning pumps myself.

Heather pretty much covered it. Determine how high your water feature will be, then multiply by 1.5. That's what your head height spdc for your.pump should be. That is the max height that a given pump will push water. The 1.5 multiplication is my guideline and has yet to fail me. For example, for a 12" water feature, find a pump with a head height of 18" minimum.

So if you need or want a waterfall on the fly this Tetrafauna™ Decorative ReptoFilter - Filtration - Reptile - PetSmart is a good one. I have been running it for about a year and a half and it does a pretty good job. Plus it is a filtered waterfall which is nice with messy WTFs.

Or I made one out of styrofoam, GS, Grout and grout sealer. Below is the outcome.
