honey has a lot of fantastic properties for humans and also a lot for frogs. honey is used commonly as an antibacteria in medicine. I would imagine that maybe putting honey in water all the time would make the water too sterile, thus killing off the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria. now I am no chemist, but when I use any kind of honey I use raw honey because it is pure and has the most nutritional and medicinal properties. (manuka is the best and most expensive) Honey in the bear shaped bottle is pasteurized and has loads of chemicals in it to keep the color different and to preserve it. I only use raw honey for myself and I am considering it for my frogs once a month to give them a cleanse. hope this helps. let me know if you want to know any other medicinal properties about honey.

Thanks for the replies ladies. i don't know how i brain farted on the natural sugars in honey. I cook quite often with it. And yes Ariel, i use raw honey from the farmer's market. i thought tupelo honey was the best out there? Maybe that's just on the east coast....lol

I don't think one drop in a water bowl would sanitize the water and i don't think it would make a mess in the tank. But it does leave room for some thought.

although tulepo honey is pricey, the manuka honey is the one with antibacterial properties
it is worth a shot to place a drop in the water bowl to see what happens.

Honey itself no matter what brand has antibacterial, antifungal and antiallergen properties. It is mostly used as a natural laxative to help relieve mild constipation and help with impaction. Honey is also good to add to a bath to reduce swelling of the cloaca and swelling of a prolapsed intestine so that it can be placed back inside the frog, but in extreme cases when a prolapse or serious impaction are present you will need a Vet. You can use pasteurised honey as well. It will cause no negative affects. It is just best to use raw or organic brands of honey becaues they are more pure.

Do not use flavored honey though because this may irritate their skin. As for keeping its color, well that I've never heard because honey is naturally a golden color even when removed from inside a honeycomb. When it ages it will crystalize and you can just warm it up to return it to it's natural state. It doesn't lose it's golden color then either, but I'm sure there are a few preservatives in it.

You don't want to flood the frog's system with sugar all the time. This may have a negative affect over time. Maybe even a tolerance to it so that it is less affective when needed. If placed in their water dish all the time it will kill some bacteria and others will thrive. There are many forms of bacteria that will feed on sugar so if any of those are within the water they may cause problems.

You're welcome. I'm no expert though, but did work with a man who raised bees and fresh honey from the hive is very healthy stuff and tastey too.

i'm sure it is. but bees?? no way, not me. i actually run screaming like a little girl when it comes to bees. i'm allergic. but it still gives my wife a source of great entertainment in the summer.....LOL
