Earlier this year, a well meaning friend who knows how much I love, love, love frogs gave me a Grow-a-Frog kit as a present. 3 cute little tad poles in a 2 sectioned habitat connected by tubes. 1 tad died within a week, the 2nd died a couple of weeks later. The third one thrived. It was fun to watch him develop into such a cute little frogletI know right about now some of you are thinking "you naive girl".....yep, I was. I thought, cool, a little aquatic frog, like the little guy
Well, now that I have done some homework, lo and behold I have myself an African clawed frog. Thanks to this forum, Tad is now happily living in a MUCH bigger tank with proper filtration and food.
He is starting to eat from my fingers and is quite the sociable little fella.
Tad and I thank all of you for the valuable information that is put out on this forum!!!
Awesome, you'll enjoy keeping these frogs. They are quite amusing and sociable indeed. : )
Life got really crazy and I haven't been on in awhile...so much to catch up on!! Thought I would update how we are getting along. Tad (who I'm beginning to suspect may be a Tad-ette ??) got a much bigger tank and is loving life with all the room to do the breast-stroke! I work from home and spend on average 10 hours a day at the computer, so I set up the tank on the long side of my desk. Tad(ette) loves hanging out and watching my computer screens. Lately I've noticed the interesting skin markings he(she) has...almost like her skin has been stitched together. It's really cool! Now I'm contemplating a name change to Frankie...works for either sex..lol.
In the interest of trying to find out the sex of my buddy, hoping the more experienced owners can help me out. I received Tad along with 2 others as tadpoles the first week of May. Within a month the other 2 had died, but Tad kept on going. It seemed like it took FOREVER to start getting her little arm/leg nubbins, and I think she became a full fledged frog in late summer. So, she is still pretty young. I've been looking closely at her backside for a sign of a cloacal extension, and I do see something, however to me it resembles an almost bony protrusion. Almost as if it is still a bit of the tail......I tried to get a good shot of her backside in my last post, but this was the best I could get as she didn't want to sit still long enough for me to zoom in..LOL
I've been doing a lot of looking online but so far have not seen any great pics of what a female looks like. She is very quiet and loves to just float around on the top of her tank.....that is part of what is leading me to thing she is really a she. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!!
At first glance your frog looks like a male to me. Not all males will have black arms especially when females are not present. I have males and females and neither of my males have black arms. I assume they are not interested in the ladies and I am OK with it. A close up of the first pic would make it easier to tell.
I'm betting you have a female... my male is SO very talkative. Last night it was almost constant croaking. Here's a good picture I found online of female parts:
Here's a picture of my male with black arms:

P.S. the "stitches" are their sensory organs/lateral line. Since they have no eardrums, tongue or moveable eyelids (and their eyes are on top of their heads) they use their franken-stitches to sense changes in the water around them.
Pretty cool! You can see them really well on my guy since he's albino.
Oh! and here's another picture of his absolutely male cloaca: (Kind of slightly protrude-y but not as much as the female in the first pic)
