ammonium chloride works well too on an empty tank. ammonia levels need to be checked daily during the process though. too much work for me. another way is to have a new filter run on a mature tank for about two weeks, then moved to a new tank. instant cycle. that's how i do it, but i have numerous tanks to do it with.
