Question about my tree frogs

All NA Tree frogs hibernate...in the wild. When kept in captivity they should not. What are your temps and humidity, there could be something else going on.

This depends on where you live. Out here in san diego it can get pretty cooled during the winter and the ambient temps drop so my most of my frogs go into hibernation for a couple weeks on there own. If your frog is healthy and well fed then there really isnt anything to worry about.

I live in Oklahoma and the temps get cold here too. I have never had my tree frogs go into hibernation. If you are keeping their cages at 68 to 78 why would they hibernate? Unless you have no lamp or heat in their cage or are kept in a unheated portion of your house....

If they are simply not eating as much, that is not hibernation.

I do use a lamp (A uvb lamp only) My enclosures are somewhat sealed to keep heat and humidity in. Im not sure what the temps are when they hibernate since they are no longer in that stage but they were no less then high 60's humidity is usually always around 70%. Also simple change in air pressure can cause a frog to go into hibernation.

May i ask how long have you had your frogs and how old are they.

And i dont consider this a fight i consider it a mature and fun conversation.

I have been keeping frogs since I was a kid, professionally for almost 10 years, and my WTF is a year old. I have been caring for the same Grey Tree Frogs since I have been at this job for 5 years. They are in a north facing window that gets rather cool and they have never "hibernated". That is why I asked about how they are being kept.

If i may interrupt this wonderfully spirited conversation for a moment, i'd like to clarify something for Dee, since she is a new frog owner. No need to have a nervous nellie on our hands

Dee, while some,but not all, tree frogs, in the wild, will go through seasons like we do, and will hibernate/aestivate/whatever during cooler months, we, as keepers, strive to simulate their climate at it's optimum conditions i.e early/late summer. It's like living an endless summer. Sounds glorious, doesn't it? You can, however, attempt to mimic their natural climate and they may or may not hibernate. But since you're not doing that, you have absolutely nothing to fear

Poison, would you mind expounding on the "simple change in air pressure"? I would imagine this would be sustained for several days and be accompanied by a temp drop as well?

i have only had them for a couple of weeks so it was a big change for them. i keep the cage at a 68 temp. one frig went in the cage and stays there, he is alive and breathing fine and the other in tucked in a corner, i kist them daily and change the water still but they seem to be hibernating. the have 12hrs light and 12hrs night lights. my home is kinda cold now

Ashley, can you give us more info on your enclosure? Temp (you said 68), humidity, substrate, ect. Any idea what your nightime temp is? There is a thread called troubke in the enclosure, filling out the info on there would be much more helpful to us so that we may be able to help you and your little ones
