    Default Pitfall Trap

I'm intrigued at the simplicity, yet hesitant because I don't know how I feel about feeding domestic frogs wild bugs. I may just build one anyways cuz I think it's kinda cool.

Read about it here. (great website, btw)

The pitfall trap can be a lot of fun! But it can also unnerve a person if you find something you really didn't expect. I have set them for earwigs, slugs and ants with some mixed success. Caught spiders, centipedes, millipedes woodlice, ants, termites, lots of beetles and some insects I have never identified. The worst time I had was uncovering one and finding a large number of bugs had been eaten by something much larger than I ever planned on catching. I think it was a centipede but I was so shocked to see if when it twitched from hiding I never got a good look at it before it scurried away after the can hit the ground a good 10 feet away. All I know is I have never seen one as large in my area and never hope to catch another in one of my pitfall traps again.

Oh and mice sometimes like to get in there to eat the bugs or bait also so don't be too carefree when opening one up.

You can make a nice one that can be handled a little easier and closes off to hold your catch until you can identify it. I will see if I can find the plans for a raised one I saw a few years back.

One good thing about using them in winter is most of the pesticides and other nasty human contaminants have been washed away for a semi safer wild caught feeder.

yeah that trap worked! but ants always invade it! I found a baby tarantula in my trap! I didnt expect it! but I released him since I dont want a spider....But beetles are rare

I.would.DIE. Seriously, a tarantula?? Thank goodness I do not live where you do!!

I'm intrigued by what I will find, and thought it would be cool to do. It would be like opening a present and not knowing if it was going to be cool or a joke, lol. I'm thinking beware of jumpy things! I might want to look into what our local bugs are before I do this, lol.
