Talking My first whites tree frog.

    Hello everyone : Again

After almost a month of setup of my vivarium. ( well the water portion of it.)
Getting the water fall and filter sorted, and river rocks, some live plants.
and some Dalmatian mollies to start the water cycling. I also added as many
ramshorn snails as I could from my 46G bow front aquarium.

I found this beautiful whites tree frog at the pet pad in raleigh NC.

    I almost missed it.
When I called them to make sure they has some in stock
they said that they had one left.
So I went to check it out.
When I arrived they were really busy. (glad to see)
So I knew where the they kept the frogs so I looked in the
terrarium and saw a really brown skinny frog sitting at the edge of the
    water bowl sleeping.
I waited patiently and one of the staff came by and asked if I needed help.
I said I would like to check out the little one that is sitting in the water bowl.
I put on my exam gloves and carefully picked up the little one.

The little sole was really sleeping good, I felt kinda bad about waking it up but
I wanted to make sure it was ok.
I noted the temp and humidity in the enclosure 78F and 80%RH Good.
The little one perked up and grunted a bit to protest being woken.
I noted that it was really thin and asked how long have they had it and who has been
    feeding it and what.
The owner was the care taker and she said that they received them two weeks ago.
and they put 10 to 15 crickets (with the hind legs removed) in the dish each night and most mornings the dish is empty.
So I didn't see any other frogs in the enclosure.
I put the little one back in its bowl and said I will have to think about it.
I really hated to leave the poor thing there but with my travel schedule I really
couldn't take care of a sick frog. Plus this is my first tree frog.
So I noticed that they had a tank full of dwarf african frogs and asked to get 6 froglets.
They are really small. About 1/2 inch S-V.
While they were getting the DAF in a bag then the owner said that I didn't see all the
    tree frogs.
Some were hiding. She lifted up a terra-cotta pot and a bright green whites tree frog was snoozing.
I put on another pair of gloves and picked it up and it tucked its self into the palm of my hand.
I think it was a little cold so it was enjoying the heat from my hand. It opened up its eyes and
turned it head to look up at me as to say "Ok I am yours." That was it.

When I got it home it was dark green and a bit scared.
I put it in the enclosure and it explored the enclosure and wanted to find a place to hide.
Dummy me I forgot to put in the hide. A half round log on top of the water fall.
As soon as I put it down the little one went right in.
After an hour or so I got a cricket with a pair of tongs and placed it in front of the hide.
in less than 5 seconds of closing the door the cricket was consumed.
So I put another one up and continued the process 5 more times.
on the 6th that was it.
I was really glad to see it had a good appetite.
So I am going to let it have some private time.

    I haven't decided on a name yet.

    Ok here is the setup.
    zoomed repti fogger
    zoomed HT-10 hygro therm
Exo terra light cycle with two 20W exo terra repti glow 5.0uvb 30%uva bulbs
    night glow heat bulb 75w
DIY red LED light for night observation. that is dim-able.
I have the set points at
    78F 70%rh for daytime
    73F 70%rh for nighttime

I have noticed that the fogger never come on that the humidity never falls below 70%
it stays at 77-82% the only time it does come on is when I have the doors open for too long.
then it fills the bottom with a fog and shuts off.

Since the entire bottom is water kept at 76F I think I might not have a problem
keeping the humidity up but keeping below 85 might be a problem this summer
when the AC dehumidifies the house.
Since I keep aquariums they keep the humidity higher in the house. never below 50%
I might have to remove the front vent cover to increase airflow in the enclosure.

I will post pictures once it starts feeling safe and starts exploring again

    CAIO!

sorry but the main lights are off since it is past 9pm and
the setup is in the bedroom.
The two bright lights on the right side of the hide is the frogs eyes
I know I must have startled it since I used the flash LOL
and after feeding several crickets it had a good BM.
    all good signs of health.

The frog is still really dark brown.
I hope it will settle down soon.

To be honest I am not too happy with the RT-10 controller.
The night and day mode is triggered by a light sensor.
and on its display it wont show you both the current Temp and RH
only the temp and its set point or the RH and its set point.

So I am thinking of using one of my spare microcontollers
an arduino mega. To monitor and control the life support systems.

I just need to get a real time clock board for it and a temp and RH sensor.
I can even have it control a fan to cool if the temp gets too high.
It can even email or text me notifications if there is any problems.
    I love being an engineer.

This is why I don't got to the pet store at night when they are waking up! If they are sleeping I am more able to resist.

I have 3 whites and they are a great first frog. Lots of personality. My only concern about your set up is the height. They love to climb and you might find your guy at the top of the tank trying to figure out how to get out!

I don't see the repti-fogger in the photo, how do you have it set up? I have one too and was just curious how other people set theirs up.

    I have noticed this as well. I am thinking of getting a 18 X 18 X 24 this weekend.
It has decided that it wants to hide on top of the waterfall. LOL

I started with an 18 inch high and 2 months later got the 18x18x24. With the smaller tank they would try to stick themselves to the mesh top and then fall. Luckily they had a soft substrate to land on!

and on my set up it is 90% water so a splash down is not bad either.

Did you cut a hole in the top to put the hose in or is it just sitting on the top? I always worry about cutting a hole in the mesh, I feel like they would somehow find a way out of it. Thankfully, Outback Steakhouse has stiff cardboard coasters and I take one and cut a hole in it big enough for the hose to fit and then it's able to sit on top of the mesh tucked slightly under the hood light and it doesn't fall over.

I just formed the hose so the end points down and place it on top of the screen.
I didn't want to cut the screen for fear of causing sharp edges and the fog would pass though the screen just fine.
It is just like the accordion section of a drinking straw that you can bend and it will stay.

OK it is official after close inspection I found his nuptial pads and while handling he fully inflated his throat sack.
So I am pretty sure it is a male. and I am going to call him Bubba.

Here he is having a little conversation with me about the matter.
