Hello from Southern California! I'm new to this forum, but not new to owning frogs. Currently I only have one frog, a Whites Tree Frog named "Rune." His tankmate, "Euripides" passed away a few weeks ago from a long illness at the age of 13. Rune is also about 13, and I've owned them since 2001. In the past I have had a Morroccan Green Toad, "Nojoqui" who taught himself to take mealworms out of my hand and would have eaten my cat if he could have gotten out of his tank (he was only about 2 inches, but had that look in his eyes). I've also had a bullfrog with a crooked back and a chronic prolapsed bladder (which my vet very kindly taught me to put back inside him... ew) who lived was a loved pet for three years. We had a packman frog when I was a kid, but my mother couldn't bear to feed it live pinkies so we adopted him out to a good home.
I like natural tanks with live plants and dirt, a nice balanced ecology with a few mushrooms and the occasional house spider to catch the mosquitoes that are attracted to the water dish. I once built a tank for my Whites with a rain system; they loved it, but the maintainance was a pain so it was taken apart after a few months.
Besides Rune the frog, I have several cats, one of who likes to lay on top of the tank against the warm light hood, a parakeet, two dogs, and a 30-year-old tortoise. I think Whites are my favorite type of pet frog with their chubby smiling faces and big bright eyes!
