I have a 2-year old White's tree frog, and he is definitely departing the juvenile stage of his life. I always go to the pet stores and see gigantic white's, and I look at mine, only about 1 1/2 inches long. I want him to bulk up, not to the point of obesity, but just for a larger body. Would more frequent fatty foods (wax worms) do the job? Tips please?
One of my frogs is massive and seems bulky but not obese, he is about 3 inches, I just feed him crickets/locust (x2) everyday, or every other day now.
Feeding fatty foods is not at all a good idea. feed the appropriate prey and the appropriate size like roaches, crickets, earth worms ect. feed my frogs as much as they will eat every day. Remember only the size between there eyes.
It should be pointed out that WTFs are notorious over eaters so they shouldn't be given what they'll eat every day because they'll eat whatever you give them! Shawn, can you post a picture of your frog so we can see how it looks? Just because the frogs at the pet store look bulkier than yours doesn't mean they're healthier. If your frog does need to gain some weight I would suggest gradually increasing his normal food intake. Another option is to feed more nutritious food such as night crawlers and roaches. Just make sure you're regularly dusting with vitamin and calcium supplements.
I'm assuming this must vary from frog to frog. Glurmo doesn't really over eat, but if I put food in with Lrrr he will eat all of it. It's for this reason I have to put Glurmo in a separate container with a lid on it when feeding. He'll eat until they're gone. So I'll rephrase. You should be careful letting your frog eat how much it wants and have a limit on it. Hopefully this is common sense though. Just like people, and other furry pets, some will over eat and some will not.
also gut-loading the pray with quality foods like fresh veg like carats , sweet potatoes ect ect will also help
when I had a baby iguana, gut loading the crickets , roaches really helped.
I will agree that feeding high fat foods like wax worms should be a once and a while thing like a few every other week or so as a treat.
